Great book, great international delivery

I bought this book recommended by a colleague because it looked interesting. It turned out to be more than expected. Very useful and practical. Also, I ordered it with international expedited shipping and wasn't really sure how long it would take, but i did it anyway. And I was pleasantly surprised to have it delivered to my home in about a week. It was great. Thanks!

A good introductory book on wireless communications systems

A very good introductory book to the world of wireless network. It covers a number of popular cellular standards including IS-136, IS-95, GSM and the AMPS. However, not much material were devoted to the physical layer (i.e. modulation and coding).

From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!

He is a combat veteran who has served as a collections operator, analyst, and interrogator in Naval Intelligence and a specialist in antiterrorism and survival, evasion, resistance, and escape (SERE). He has spent 17 years deploying on antiterrorism and counterterrorism intelligence operations in the Balkans, Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa in direct support to the principal agencies of the U.S. intelligence community. Mr. Nance has witnessed and investigated numerous terrorist incidents and participated in response operations from the two American embassy and U.S. Marine barracks bombings in Beirut, Lebanon; the TWA 847 hijacking; the Achille Lauro "marjacking;" the Libyan air raid; the first Gulf War; the War in the Balkans; the millennium bomb plot; the attack on the USS Cole; the September 11 attacks; and hundreds of suicide bombings and terrorist attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and the Arabian Peninsula.

As a master SERE instructor, Mr. Nance ran the al-Qaeda simulation group for the U.S. military’s advanced terrorism, abduction, and hostage survival school from 1997 to 2001. On the morning of 9/11, he witnessed firsthand the attack on the Pentagon and became a rescuer at the crash site. In the response to the September 11 attacks. he has trained hundreds of U.S. Special Operations personnel operating in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and sub-Saharan Africa in terrorism intelligence. An internationally recognized expert, author, consultant, and scholar on the al-Qaeda global terrorist organization, terror-based insurgencies, jihadist philosophy and tactics, and counter-extremist ideology and strategies he provides regular commentary for the global media including the BBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, and lectures for the International Spy Museum. He lives and works between the Middle East and his home in New York.

Six stars. Much much better than everything else. This is a great book for beginners. It cleared up the mess in my head created by other "tutorials". Written by a university professor, as opposite to most other book written by "consultants with 5 years of experience", who cannot put 3 words together. The author knows how and what to present. It is logical, short and written by good textbook standards. No marketing, ne self promotion, no classes Foo and Bar. I wish I had read that book long ago.

A great book for getting started in Java Web development!

This book is a great book if you are new to Java web development and you want to get up to speed on the fundamental technologies (like jsp, html and servlets) quickly. The chapters are short and the explanations and examples are so clear and concise you could probably learn the basics of constructing a web site in less that a week if you put your mind to it.

The only issue I had with the book was I did not think the Hibernate chapters were as clear as they could be. For that I would recommend Cameron McKenzie's book "Hibernate Made Easy" which does a better job of walking you though the setup and use of Hibernate.

A useful textbook for beginners

This is a great book for a niche audience: Students who are familiar with the Java language, but not with Hibernate (a popular library for storing objects in databases), JSPs (a format for embedding Java in HTML pages--the book does not assume previous experience with HTML) or servlets (Java code that interacts directly with HTTP requests). It is, in short, a comprehensive textbook on the subject, well-suited to undergraduates who have taken only a course or two on programming.

Those with prior web development experience are more likely to be interested in learning about a particular architecture. Few web applications are being developed with JSPs and servlets these days; instead, most use something like Spring MVC, Struts, Wicket, or the Groovy-driven Grails (my personal choice), all of which have fine books dedicated to them. Typically, these web frameworks act as a layer on top of the servlet layer, greatly simplifying the architecture. Learning to use servlets first might help to better understand the more high-level APIs, but it's probably unnecessary. If you want to jump right into creating professional-grade web applications for the Java platform, I'd suggest The Definitive Guide to Grails.

Suleiman the Magnificent

For nearly anyone interested in the Ottoman Empire's finest era and Sultan, this book is one of the greatest sources I have read so far. I read this when I was writing my first term paper on Suleiman the Magnificent, and found it to be a great source. Full of unique facts and commentary, Mr. Roger Bigelow Merriman has provided new views about a very overlooked man of history. Mr. Merrimen also gives an overview of Europe at the time of Suleiman; the sixteenth century, in order to fully understand what was going on in the world. It also has helped me to understand what is going on in the world today, and the many seemingly strange reasons for why these events occur. There are many reasons why others should read about this great man. In the ongoing war between the Crescent and the Cross, Suleiman was perhaps the closest man to nearly conquer Christianity and Europe during the Renaissance. The battle of Vienna, although Suleiman and his Ottomans did not triumph, gave Christianity and Western Europe one of the biggest scares of all time. In Merriman's introduction, he writes of Suleiman, "...the ruler of the Ottoman Empire at the height of its glory and strength, a conqueror of many lands, whose fleets dominated the Mediterranean and whose armies laid siege to Vienna, whom Francis I of France addressed as a suppliant, and to whom Charles V's younger brother Ferdinand paid tribute." Not only a great piece of history, this time period is very relevant to current events. (e.g.*; The Balkans and Kosovo).

Well written, book covers many details of the Ottoman empire, it's grown and the seeds of its ultimate demise. Suleiman was truly magnificent in his accomplishments, and although brutal, it was probably a sign of the times.

Hewitt, here interprets the quatrains by French astrologer turned prophet Nostradamus with the help of modern astrologer Liz Greene. The use of modern astrology lends a sense of authenticity to the prophecies from the 16th century. Lorie gives interpretations for the period that spans current headlines through the Pisces/Aquarius cusp.
