One of the wisest books about business ever written

The principles in this book are based on Daniel Defoe's extensive experiences in international business (in the 1700s), and the advice he wrote then is just as valid for people starting out in business today. In addition to cautionary chapters on debt, partners, and "leaving business to servants", Defoe writes on the personal choices of the successful business person - the perils of expensive living, the value of diligence and "application", and even the dangers of marrying too soon. Recommended.

Timeless guide to business practicalities

Defoe wrote this in the late 1700s, and it was revised in the early 1800s, with comical footnotes about how those antiquated business practices had now been modernized! Defoe was involved in various mercantile ventures, and wrote from hard earned experience, providing a bona fide textbook of business strategy and negotiating practices that is still very cogent today. I'd highly recommend this book to young people entering the business world, but alas it's out of print, and thus impractical to obtain.

Complete Introduction to Craftsman/Tradesman Skills (1700s-1800s)

Most people will say that Daniel Defoe wrote one great book in his life (Robinson Crusoe). I would disagree....he wrote lots of interesting books, but with unusual backgrounds....blending fiction with current events and life events. This book follows that trail. It was written in the early 1700s, published in 1726, and updated later. It is for all practical purposes....the first real English publication on tradesman knowledge. Throughout the 1700s and 1800s....it probably was a necessary book for any young man (say 16 to 20 years old) to read and understand the "profession".

In today's atmosphere? I'd actually suggest this as an excellent book for a young person about to start out life (say 16 to 18 years old) in a trade. The advice offered in the book is a bit OLD (yes I admit that part).....but it does still have value in the modern world and kinda reminds one of the simplicity of various trades when you get down the basics. And this book is precisely what it suggests....the complete tradesman and his knowledge.

Easily read over one weekend. I would give Defoe credit....it is a concise book....with odd stories as he always delivers in his books, and shows no complexity in understanding the times or events.

Also, if you are taking a college business-related class and need some material for a research paper....this might lead up to excellent five-page paper on tradesman talents/skills, and how they really haven't changed in three-hundred years.

Not a bad book but TOO MANY errors

As another reviewer pointed out, it has a lot of errors in the code. If you just follow the instructions you would most probably not get your code compiling.

Author omitted many things that you need to know. He states, for example, "create SDI project" in step 1. In step 10 or so you find out that you had to give it a specific name which he failed to indicate in the beginning. Same with IDs and so on. Author also fails to give the code for the header files and you just need to think what each variable does (and still write the header file code, of course) or download the solution from the web.

Also, author asks to call the function with one name, and in the code he changes the name to a different one. Adds confusion.

This is a regurgetation of C++ and MFC. .NET and managed C++ are only briefly addressed. There are better books.

Good overall, except for bug ridden examples

I've been working through this book for a while now, and overall the material is presented in a decent format. For the most part you can pick the topic to work on (ie. Menus, Dialog boxes, etc) and focus on that chapter to learn it. For someone like myself who needs a point solution (very specific app with very narrow GUI requirements) this works well.

However that said, one thing that is driving me nuts in this book are the bug-ridden examples. I've been through quite a few chapters now, and I've come to the expectation that its not a question of -if- a given example has a bug, but where it is located (since it almost certainly has one or more).

To give an example I just read over the Modeless dialog example in chapter 11. It starts off having you throw down a dialog and a bunch of controls, without exactly telling you what IDs to give them (after a while you get used to this, because the author does this a lot). Its important because by the time you get to step 7 in the example you realize that the ellipsis button should have an ID of IDC_FILEOPEN if you want your function call to line up with the demo (again not such a problem since you can change the IDs at anytime - but I'm just getting started). At step 10 you get to enter in a global function (huh? what the heck happened to the class?). Moving on - Step 12 has you adding in member variables to a class which won't exist until step 13. Yeah good job there. Step 19 has an erroneous structure definition. And to top it off, steps 21 and 23 have you add message handler functions without actually telling you how to map them in the message map. Whew! and this is just one example program. Typed in exactly as the steps in the book describe, this example compiled with something like 20+ errors. Fixing the structure and the map problems (which required downloading the code off the website to figure out what to do), eventually got it to work.

Overall I think the content and the way the material is broken up is good, however this book needs a complete overhaul and proofing on the examples.

Her father, who loved her dearly, indulged her in her wishes. and taught her to hunt like a boy. When both father and mother were taken by death, she again turned back to the hunting, providing the game for her brothers and sisters and following the war path to avenge her father's death. Disapproval of her course finally gives way and she is highly honored by her tribe, and like the young men who prove themselves worthy, she is given a warrior's name. Running Eagle.

These books just get better. This is a really fascinating story of a beautiful young girl that became a warrior with the Blackfeet. Her father lets her pursue her desire to learn the arts of war that only men were supposed to do. She did not try to become a man. Only in battle did she wear men's clothing. And she remained a woman when not leading warriors on expeditions against their enemies. It is also a love story of two people, Running Eagle, the Warrior Girl and a warrior who loved her and she loved him. The Sun God refused to allow her to marry. She was pledged to serve her people and to not ever marry. She was ordered to remain a virgin. This is a really good book and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the Blackfeet or just would like a well written book.

Grabbed me right from the start..a very good story. This winter when the days are cold and short and dark I will read this again. I smiled and laughed and cheered and cried.
