Buy This! Memorize It!
By Nicole Kennedy
Buy this now if you're planning on attending law school! It's great! I read it the summer before I attended and used all the methods detailed. Yes, I carried 5 highlighters around. No shame. I graduated with honors from a top tier law school. I had a previous version so I can't attest to any changes. I buy this as a gift whenever anyone questions me about attending law school. Although everyone has a different approach that works for them, this book really helps you to keep things in focus and adequately prepare for what could be the hardest challenge you have faced thus far. I have been practicing law 12 years and now I have my own practice.

Great source of information for anyone in or interested in law school
By Paul K.
For several months I was mulling over the idea of taking the LSAT and applying to law school. I asked people who had been through law school or were currently attending what it was like, but I still felt unsure whether or not it was a good choice for me.

I ordered a few books to read what the law school experience would be like. The mistake I made was not reading this one first, because it's the only one you really need to get a great overview of law school, beginning to end.

Using the opinions of former law school students, the book demonstrates from the beginning that the purpose of the book is not simply to sell people on the idea of law school. Some students say they loved the experience, some say they're not sure if they'd do it again, and others say they made a mistake by attending and now feel trapped in their law careers.

Miller then leads the reader through what to expect throughout the years of law school. In the first part he discusses the application process, taking the LSAT, how to decide which schools are for you, and the reality of law school - good and bad.

Then he dedicates the next parts to what to expect in each specific year of law school. All the while he inserts testimony from former students about what they felt they did right, and what they would have done differently. By the end, all the questions I had about whether or not law school is something I should consider seriously were answered.

I was reading this book from the point of view of someone new to the idea of law school, and from that point of view I found it very helpful. I also believe this book could be helpful for people in other stages of law school. The parts on each individual year seem like they would be helpful, if I were in that position.

The only potential drawback I can see is that this is not a lengthy book. The first roughly 100 pages had answered most all my questions, addressing what the law school environment is like and what you should expect potential careers to be like. If you are looking for a longer and more detailed read about law school, you may want to opt for a lengthier book. However, from my perspective, this is exactly the kind of book I needed to read to settle my questions.

This book has no equal for preparing for law school.
By S. Hoffman
When I first read the reviews for this book about six months ago, before I entered law school or purchased the book, I noticed that there seemed to be countless reviews from pre-1Ls saying how prepared they "felt" about law school. This was obviously worthless support since they had not used any of the advice first-hand.

Although I have only completed one semester of law school so far, I believe that I can really testify that the book is a brilliant piece of writing for anybody preparing for law school. Its advice on book-briefing, using commercial outlines, and preparing for class are spot on and need to be followed by as many law students as are willing. Also, the advice it gives on securing a summer job, which I have used extensively so far during Christmas break for getting a 1L summer associateship, is terrifically helpful, especially since it provides an albeit somewhat outdated interview with hiring partners of both a small firm and a large firm.

Anyone preparing for law school needs to get this book; it spells out what you need to do not just for your first year but EACH YEAR OF LAW SCHOOL, including Law Review (and the process of getting on journals), moot court, and all things 2L- and 3L-related.

But if you are my classmate, don't buy the book... I want to stay on top of the curve as much as possible. :-)

Assuming Names: a con artist's masquerade (Criminal Mischief Book 1), by Tanya Thompson

When it was over, there were a lot of questions.

The detectives were embarrassed but they still wanted answered, "How did a 15-year-old runaway successfully pose as a world travelled countess?"

The newspapers turned it back on them, practically sneering, "How did she do it while under investigation by the FBI, DEA, and Interpol?"

The Mafia had been demanding the same thing for six months, "What is your real name?"

And the psychologists asked the question they always ask, "Why?"

It’s the why of it that will keep a girl in trouble.

Assuming Names is the true story of a young con artist. It’s the tale of a runaway that assumed the title of Countess and then went on to fool the FBI, DEA, and Interpol—as well as a number of other celebrities and institutions—with an elaborate tale of world intrigue.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: Hello everyone. This is Tanya. You may find yourself reading my book and saying, “No, this did not happen.” You may be inclined to say it is too far-fetched and, quite frankly, impossible. I have provided evidence at my website that what I write is the truth. I mention it at the front of the book but it may be easy to overlook, so I am reiterating here.

At my website are copies of the newspaper and magazine articles mentioned in the book. The articles are from the Austin American Statesman, The Dallas Morning News, and Woman’s World Magazine. They are all nationally recognized media for news. Previous reviewers were concerned I may have gone to Photoshop to create them, and while my book does paint me as the sort that would do such a thing, the reality is that those media institutions would sue me into submission before the cache could be cleared.

In the end, you may not believe me, but you can surely believe what the papers wrote.

"Yes, really."
By Victor Jimenez
Edit: Story is easily verified through the Dallas Morning News archives. Search for title: Teen-ager untangles her web of deceit. Date: May 1, 1986

I normally don’t get involved in these discussions because I find someone has already said what I want to say so I don’t have to say it. This time however no one is weighing in with the obvious. The vitriol in the one star reviews is either ignorance or personal. I’m not slinging insults, I use the word ignorance in the strictest definition. The reviewers are unaware the author’s story is backed up by the media. Big media, like the Dallas Herald, Woman’s World Magazine, the Statesmans, and the giant old elephant in the room, the Associated Press.

You ask, “Really?” and the media answers, “Yes, really.”

Yes really, a fifteen year old girl went and pulled a jaw dropping long con that should earn her some sort of recognition in Wikipedia’s list of famous impostors. Because none of those tricksters took on the FBI or Interpol. Nor did any of them do it before they were legal to drive.

So before you trash the book as too farfetched to be tolerated, go and look the story up.

Because if you’re not tearing the book apart for its unsubstantiated claims, which we’ve determined are substantiated, then I suspect the hate is personal, because this young woman has gone to some effort to make enemies. She starts the book with a Bloody Mary styled incantation against Jesus (something I was too terrified as a child to repeat three times) and then she casually makes a couple of rape jokes. Really.

But it’s kind of funny. Really, again.

Not every single word she writes is repeated by the media, but the big stuff is. The bits about the FBI, Interpol, the DEA, INS, the mental asylum, the sheriff’s departments, Ron Howard, the ACLU, and the Dallas Refugee Agency. All the big stuff is bona fide verified.

You ask, “Really?” and the media answers, “Yes, really.”

Have you ever wondered if you have the grits to be a professional con artist?
By Linda June
I really enjoyed this book. Assuming it is all true and the events described weren't given much in the way of literary license, we get to ride along in the head of an amicable, compulsive sociopathic con artista. How fun is that? The author, going by the name Tanya Thompson, learned early in life how to exploit her good looks, charm, fearlessness and extreme intelligence to avoid boredom, real work and to have astonishing adventures. She describes what it's like to be an admitted sociopath. You just can't help but laugh at how her mind works. Or doesn't, as the case may be. You don't have to like her or what she does (presuming she's still in the game), but you do have to respect the giant huevos and her very devoted guardian angel. It is entirely reasonable to have doubts about the authenticity of all the events described, but if you just give yourself over to it, you'll have a good time following Tanya's escapades. If she's shining us, well, so what? The salvation of your soul and your bank account probably don't rest secured on how much stock you put into her autobiography.

Her first official con (not counting the times she would flirt with older men until they came after her, then ran to hide behind her retired Marine daddy) was a fifteen-year-old's attempt to gain an official, government-issued ID in the name of an entirely fictitious British countess. When that failed, she figured out how to steal identities of real people, instead. Okay, you do feel sorry for the real people who really got burned, but the author claims she is capable of feeling guilty, so she contained her cons to stealing things that are usually covered by insurance. That does have a way of assuaging your own guilt for enjoying her cons along with her. Having brought down the ire of a Mexican smuggling ring on one of the women whose identity she borrowed, she even had the decency (if you can call it that) to make an anonymous call to the poor girl and warn her that she might soon have some ticked-off hombres showing up at her house. You don't have to like her, as mentioned, but you really can't help yourself. You just know that she could con you in a heartbeat and you probably wouldn't even mind it that much.

The story left off with an intro to the sequel where the author is in Belize turning over a stolen Mustang as a bribe for a bureaucrat in order to be admitted into the country. The author can add writing to her list of talents, as well. The narrative is easy and unassuming. It flows well and never bogs down in details that don't advance the story. Assuming Names was such a fun read, I can't wait to see what she stirs up in Belize in her next book The Expatriates

What a ride!
By The Every Free Chance Reader
Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. I read it numerous times during the editing process and enjoyed it more and more each time I read it.

As is often said, the truth is stranger than fiction. If I didn’t know this was a true story, I would have thought it was too far-fetched to be a fiction novel. I mean, you have a 15 year old girl outsmarting so many law enforcement agencies it isn’t even funny. Yet, I laughed. A lot. I shook my head. A lot. I gasped. A lot. I think my favorite part of the whole book is in the middle. Ms. Thompson answered my questions with one word: “Fifteen.” That sums up every question, disbelief, head-shaking moment in this book. And it sums those moments up perfectly.

Assuming Names takes the reader on one wild ride. An unforgettable ride. A ride that will keep you glued to the book until you read the last page.

Would I recommend it: Yes, I would.

Will I read it again: I doubt it, but I am looking forward to reading Ms. Thompson’s future books.

(I received a copy of this book for review purposes. Although I was compensated for the editing work, it in no way affected the outcome of my review. My review is my honest opinion of the book.)

Returning to Reims (Semiotext(e) / Foreign Agents), by Didier Eribon

On thinking the matter through, it doesn't seem exaggerated to assert that my coming out of the sexual closet, my desire to assume and assert my homosexuality, coincided within my personal trajectory with my shutting myself up inside what I might call a class closet. -- from Returning to Reims

After his father dies, Didier Eribon returns to his hometown of Reims and rediscovers the working-class world he had left behind thirty years earlier. For years, Eribon had thought of his father largely in terms of the latter's intolerable homophobia. Yet his father's death provokes new reflection on Eribon's part about how multiple processes of domination intersect in a given life and in a given culture. Eribon sets out to investigate his past, the history of his family, and the trajectory of his own life. His story weaves together a set of remarkable reflections on the class system in France, on the role of the educational system in class identity, on the way both class and sexual identities are formed, and on the recent history of French politics, including the shifting voting patterns of the working classes -- reflected by Eribon's own family, which changed its allegiance from the Communist Party to the National Front.

Returning to Reims is a remarkable book of sociological inquiry and critical theory, of interest to anyone concerned with the direction of leftist politics in the contemporary world, and to anyone who has ever experienced how sexual identity can clash with other parts of one's identity. A huge success in France since its initial publication in 2009, Returning to Reims received enthusiastic reviews in Le Monde, Libration, L'Express, Les Inrockuptibles, and elsewhere.

Review

An eminent Parisian intellectual, gay and politically progressive, from a conservative, working -- class provincial family, Didier Eribon has written a book that will be of great interest to those concerned with questions of social class, sexuality, and intellectual community. Returning to Reims is a fascinating and courageous account of how one of France's leading writers has negotiated a complex, frequently conflicted confluence of social and psychic identities.

(Leo Bersani, author of Homos and coauthor of Intimacies)

This intensely personal account of Didier Eribon's family is a fascinating and compelling read...The book is beautifully written (and as beautifully translated). It is at once pleasureable and edifying to read.

(Joan W. Scott, Institute for Advanced Study)

Class vs. Sexuality
By david bergman
Didier Eribon is a distinguished French journalist and scholar, whose origins are in the working class. He argues in this book that he faced much more difficulty crossing class boundaries than he did living as a gay man. His account of the difficulties he had making his way through school is convincing and moving. Yet it is not clear whether the resistance came more from the upper classes not wanting someone from the working class or the resistance came from the gravitation pull of his working class origins. Perhaps it is impossible to say.

Beat Down to Your Soul: What Was the Beat Generation?, by Ann Charters

In this wide-ranging anthology, Beat scholar Ann Charters brings together more than seventy-five essays, reviews, memoirs, poems, and sketches that evoke the credos and the controversies surrounding the Beat generation writers of the 1950s. Charters includes discussions of all the major Beat figures-Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, Diane di Prima, Gary Snyder, and many more-from commentaries by the Beats themselves as well as by such writers as Henry Miller, William Carlos Williams, Mary McCarthy, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Wolfe, Grace Paley, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.. Charters also explores the humorous side of the Beat generation, its place in post-war American culture, and the contribution of the important women authors who also wrote Beat.

From Publishers Weekly
For a fresh take on an often simplified historical moment, look at Beat Down to Your Soul: What Was the Beat Generation? in which Ann Charters has assembled some obscure and some familiar material by and about beatniks. In a letter to poet and critic Richard Eberhart, Allen Ginsberg says, "I was flattered... by the idea of recognition but really didn't agree with your evaluation of my own poetry," and explains, for 11 pages, his aesthetic and social intentions. Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores how writer Anatole Broyard, whose essay "A Portrait of the Hipster" appeared in the Partisan Review in 1948, passed as white early in his career in New York. Diane di Prima's piece about her newsletter with LeRoi Jones, Floating Bear, evokes the excitement of the early '60s East Village poetry scene.

Excellent Anthology
By Dr. Rico
I've always admired Charters work concerning the Beats . It's scholarly and entertaining at the same time. Back in the sixties, if you asked an English professor why Beats weren't covered in the textbook ,you'd probably get a sideways look of disdain. If I were teaching a course on American Lit today, this would be mandatory. Some of the source material has been more or less unobtainable which makes this a true goldmine. It always seems like the Beat movement as a literary topic has been pretty much exhausted, but Ms. Charters has proven that not to be true.

beat down to your classroom
By A Customer
This anthology has some interesting material, particularly the excerpts from the "beats" themselves and the panel discussion of "beat women" at the end. But it leaves out some of the most interesting beats (Philip Whalen, Lew Welch, Kirby Doyle, Lenore Kandel, Richard Brautigan, Albert Saijo etc.) while larding the fat volume with writers who just boringly interpreted or reviewed the beats (Joyce Carol Oates, Alfred Kazin,Mary McCarthy etc.), who were irrelevant to the beats (Anatole Broyard, Jack Spicer, john Updike etc.), or who secretly disliked or openly hated the beats (Norman Podhoretz, William Carlos Williams, Diana Trilling, Kenneth Rexroth etc.) Not really much soul in that. What's the point of making academic hay out of the most anti-academic writers of the 20th century? Well of course the point is--making academic hay, in this case by an author who doesn't seem to care much for the beats herself. Like what F.Scott Fitzgerald said about his Princeton poetry professors who really hated poetry.

It has been clear from the beginning that William Blake was both a political radical and a radical psychologist. In William Blake on Self and Soul, Laura Quinney uses her sensitive, surprising readings of the poet to reveal his innovative ideas about the experience of subjectivity. Blake’s central topic, Quinney shows us, is a contemporary one: the discomfiture of being a self or subject. The greater the insecurity of the “I” Blake believed, the more it tries to swell into a false but mighty “Selfhood.” And the larger the Selfhood bulks, the lonelier it grows. But why is that so? How is the illusion of “Selfhood” created? What damage does it do? How can one break its hold? These questions lead Blake to some of his most original thinking. Quinney contends that Blake’s hostility toward empiricism and Enlightenment philosophy is based on a penetrating psychological critique: Blake demonstrates that the demystifying science of empiricism deepens the self’s incoherence to itself. Though Blake formulates a therapy for the bewilderment of the self, as he goes on he perceives greater and greater obstacles to the remaking of subjectivity. By showing us this progression, Quinney shows us a Blake for our time.

Review
Quinney powerfully rereads both Blake's early work and his later visionary poems as an unfolding record of the embattled psyche. This extremely important contribution to our understanding of Blake should appeal not just to Blakeans but to all who think about the psychology of transcendence. (Paul Fry, Yale University)

Much of William Blake's most extraordinary work depends on his concept of 'Selfhood.' Laura Quinney has gone beyond all previous attempts to deal with Blake's treatment of what it means to be a solitary consciousness. Quinney illuminates Blake's very original relationship to the Gnostic heresy and his astonishing vision of what might redeem our humanity without falling into received doctrines. (Harold Bloom)

Quinney's readings of Blake's works, from Thel to Jerusalem, offer much insight, particularly when she engages with the debates of Blake's time. (Shirley Dent Times Literary Supplement 2010-07-02)

Important subject marred by academese
By Bohdan Hodiak
I remember as a student reading Blake, and though I didn’t really understand him, I felt in my guts that Blake was on to something very, very important. He could see that the brave new world that was developing around him was on its way to conquer the earth while losing its soul. And we were in the same boat, discarding religion and stepping out into the abyss. That may be why interest in Blake has exploded in the past half century, among a select group of people. The number of books published on Blake since then can fill a large bookcase. Google his name and you will see the interest.
But Blake has always been a problem for those who really want to study his thinking. He lived in dangerous, intolerant times and had to write some of his long poems in a kind of code. For generations the prophetic books were looked on as incomprehensible. But then came Northrop Frye and his superb book "Fearful Symmetry" and then Foster Damon and his invaluable “A Blake Dictionary” and the gates finally opened.
Now there is Laura Quinney and her “Blake on the Soul and Self.” She could not have picked a better topic for this is the essence of Blake. He not only tried to show the sickness and self-division of modern educated man but a way out of the trap. Quinney does a fine job of explaining the chief prophetic books and her writing is clear. But she seems to aim her book at fellow academics. So you will meet such words as alterity, aleatory, aporia, apodosis. When she mentioned a “collapse of agency” it took me a moment to figure out she meant something to do with active, generative. There are more elegant ways to say “our species dwells alone in sunderance” or “the linear temporality of the natural world.” That’s just a sample. As I neared the end of a couple of the chapters I felt like a school boy impatiently waiting for the 3:00 p.m. bell to ring. Still, Quinney’s topic is important and helped me understand better such phrases as Divine Imagination and Mental Fight. If you are getting ready to read the prophetic books , or have read them, this is an excellent help.
A bit of nit picking. Quinney calls Blake an atheist. No. He is not a theist or a pantheist but he certainly believed in a higher power and was deeply spiritual. You can discard Nobodaddy and still believe in God. Quinney also says “contact with nature is detrimental to the soul.” It is in nature that I first felt my intimation of transcendence. Also, “consciousness has no place in nature.” Well, without consciousness I couldn’t experience nature. Animals have consciousness, even though they can’t say I am I. I know, these are particular definitions with their own special meanings but that could be made clearer.

In many ways Blake really saw into the depths of our souls and came close to the truth about life and its meaning. Compared to Blake people like Sigmund Freud were half blind. But it is sad to me that he could not make his understanding more practical, at least a bit of the time. Here was a man propagating an active, dynamic, heroic spirituality. He saw himself as a Creator with a capital C, with the power of God in him. Yet there were days when he and his wife went hungry for lack of money. When he died he was taken to a pauper’s field and thrown into a pit, followed soon by two other bodies on top of his. Could he not have used his Divine Imagination to earn a bit more money? There is nothing wrong with giving the devil his due as long as you keep your soul. Anyway, I’m glad I read this book. I gave it three stars because this review is aimed at the average Blake lover, not the aspiring Ph.D. I would give Frye’s and Damon’s books five stars.

An Appetite for Poetry, by Frank Kermode

Frank Kermode is the preeminent practitioner of the art of criticism in the English-speaking world. As such his task entails the readiness to evaluate in general terms the widest range of texts, both ancient and modern, and also the ability to make public sense of the seemingly arcane debates about theories of literature as they pertain to the ongoing process of evaluation. It has been Kermode's distinction to make a virtue--as all the best critics have done--of the necessarily occasional nature of his profession. That virtue is evident in every page of this set of essays.

This is a book in which Kermode asks the reader to share his pleasure in the literature of a set of major writers--Milton, Eliot, Stevens. He vividly evokes Milton after the Restoration of Charles II, with a fine speculative discussion of the interplay between his personal and political circumstances and the preoccupations of his poetry. He sets before us T. S. Eliot living in a condition of permanent exile, Wallace Stevens in his old age dwelling poetically in Connecticut, and author/critic William Empson, whose singular career was marked by both the pleasure of the text and the delight in conceptual issues that characterizes so much of the contemporary taste for theory. Other essays draw our attention to debates on the literary canon and problems of biblical criticism and their implications for the study of narrative in particular and the interpretation of secular literary texts in general.

These are professional essays that nevertheless defy the excesses of modern professionalism. Nowhere is this more evident than in the polemical Prologue to the book, in which Kermode sorts out the good from the meretricious in contemporary criticism. He argues that some proclaimed theorists "seem largely to have lost interest in literature," while the best, like Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida, have never lost what Kermode prizes most highly, the very appetite or hunger for poetryand literature. Always readable, elegant even on gnarledmatters, and courteous in contexts where othersare bad-tempered, An Appetite for Poetry is thework of one of the most distinguished mindsof our time. In reaffirming the professional responsibilities of criticism now beingneglected, it displays a generous hospitality tonew ideas.

From Library Journal
Kermode, an important critic who authored The Sense of an Ending and many other volumes, resists the post-modern notion that theory is, if not more valuable than literature, then at least its equal. Bringing considerable expertise to each of these ten essays--which treat Empson, Eliot, and Freud, among others--he instead supports a belief in the primacy of the text. In a lengthy, well-argued prologue, he develops his disagreement with theoreticians who hold not only that all texts are equal, but also that the literary "canon" is but a political act to oppress women and minorities. His comments on Milton and on Wallace Stevens are superbly reasoned and expressed. Much can be learned from this major book, but much learning must be brought to it as well: it is addressed to the professional.
