We Mammals in Hospitable Times (Carnegie Mellon Poetry Series), by Jynne Dilling Martin

We Mammals in Hospitable Timesrushes headlong into an awfully dangerous planet: a spinning rock in outer space called Earth, where the smallest zoo animals are forgotten in fires, cats flee vacuums, lovers betray and abandon one another, basements flood as the globe warms, and an adopted parrot shrieks unfamiliar names. The narrator of these poems wavers between wary—“sometimes I mix up fear with hissed instructions”—and wide-eyed, wanting desperately to make sense of all this perplexing behavior.

Sometimes paranoid, occasionally manic, often very funny, these poems consult archaeologists, biologists, psychiatrists, encyclopedias and even aliens, trying to understand how so many disparate things can be interrelated. And even as the poet reaches some grim conclusions about our collective fate, this sense of doom only increases her awe at the strange and fleeting beauty that surrounds us, whether it be gams of satiny whales, the shiny pink hill made by microwaved bologna, or the cyanobacteria of an Antarctic lake radiating orange light.

With this highly anticipated debut, Jynne Dilling Martin delivers poetry that offer armfuls of empathy, curiosity, and spiritual force.

Review
“Tigers, museum docents, the planet Mars, North and South Polar things populate deft, solid couplets….Full of intelligence and discretion as they describe a world in transition.”—New York Times Book Review

“[A] guide who displays the wisdom of a shaman and the specificity of a scientist . . . Martin’s distinctive approach, full of complex leaps, makes this debut sound like no other.”—Washington Post

“Martin is a dreamer and questioner who recognizes both the painful absurdities of the world and our ability to thrive despite them.”—O Magazine

“Transformative…full of wondrous glimpses into arctic wildlife.”—Flavorwire “An extraordinary poet.”—Time Out New York

Review
“Jynne Dilling Martin's imagination is omniscient and kaleidoscopic. Like Marianne Moore and Wislawa Szymborska, poets with whom she shares a certain cosmic poetical temperament, she dazzles us with catalogues of marvelously specific terrestrial wonders, endlessly thinkingthem into collisions and parallelism. The poems ofWe Mammals in Hospitable Timesexploreand inventthe world with such wonder, affection, and ingenuity that we come away delighted.” (Tony Hoagland)

“The exquisitely imagined poems inWe Mammals in Hospitable Timesoffer a unique portrait of our strange world, introducing aliens baffled by our inhospitable actions toward our planet and a scientist who ‘drills a hole in the sea snail’s shell / and slides a miniature stethoscope inside, listens for the heartbeat.’ Martin’s poems are sensitive as a stethoscope, insistent as a drilled hole, mournful but also threaded with the desire for understanding and transformation. These poems present meticulous and mysterious acts of hope and sadness. We Mammals in Hospitable Timesshould be read by every human on the planet, read out loud to the penguins, and launched into outer space on the next Voyager spacecraft.” (Matthea Harvey)

“Jynne Dilling Martin is my favorite young American poet. Her dispatches from the South Pole make life on our disappearing planet bearable again.” (New York Timesbestselling author Gary Shteyngart)

“I will say this plainly: I love Jynne Dilling Martin's poems. Mordant and knowing, elegiac and merry, cosmic and cellular, her work is a reminder of how truly mysterious and miraculous our world is. She seamlessly stitches together the past and the present, the scientific and the subjective; with one line, she'll rip you apart, and with the next, she'll make you whole again.” (New York Timesbestselling author Curtis Sittenfeld)

“With a rare expansiveness that is keenly felt, heroically composed, and constantly surprising,We Mammals in Hospitable Timesguides us through the sudden exultations and terrors of wide-ranging explorations. In their levities and plunges, these poems make sharp and poignant the unavoidable perils and rewards of being open to this world. What an invigorating, intelligent, and tonic testimony to the art of curiosity and the power of poetry.” (Dean Young)

About the Author
JYNNE DILLING MARTIN’S poetry has appeared in Granta, The Boston Review, Ploughshares, Slate, and on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Her nonfiction has appeared in Glamour, Food & Wine, and The Antarctic Sun. She was a 2013 Antarctica Writer in Residence and lives in New York City.

Great collection
By J from NY
Some of the imagery in Jynne Dilling Martin's poetry is truly fantastic stuff, definitely fantastic for the subject matter: the natural world and her worldview of us as animals struggling with absurd paradoxes. I'm not surprised Dean Young left a favorable comment on the collection.

"The magnetic needle dips. Only afterwards we ask if it cost
too much. Will this species be here tomorrow or not?/
asks the scientist to her assembled team. The ponies eat oats
in silence, the instruments keep ticking, the icy water

washes on and off the deck. A bell abruptly rings a warning:
oxidative stress, methane concentrations, too much heat."

Not a hot-for-science guy myself, her imagery made me interested. Gorgeous stuff.

Grading for Landscape Architects and Architects, by Peter Petschek

"The contour line is the only precise and accurate means for representing the free and natural formation of terrain in the plan; so learn to use this instrument!" Professor Hans Loidl, Landscape Architect and Teacher

The two design elements of landscape architecture are plants and terrain. While the subject of vegetation is well documented by numerous publications, there is a lack of technical literature in the field of grading.

This volume fills that gap: History, forms of terrain, basic principles, digital modeling, slope reinforcement systems, construction site implementation, and practical examples all are treated in detail by the author. Short problems, systematically organized and arranged in increasing order of difficulty, enable the reader to apply what he or she has learned. The exercises are suitable for self-study. Together with the large amount of practical information provided by the book, they also enable architects to become familiar with grading as an important design element of landscape architecture.

An excellent read - just remember that it uses metric units.
By J. Brooks
an excellent read that will give some great insights and perspectives on how to think about grading. It's a quick read, too, with lots of images and graphics. The text is to the point after the first section about history. This book uses a more European paradigm (I think it's originally written in German), so the formulas might use different symbols, but it's still the same thing. The grading practice problems in the back are great, but remember that they are in metric or you will start to question your sanity with the first and easiest grading problem in the book.

Grade Easy for the 21st Century
By P. A. May
Thankfully CLARB has a new 'in-print' reference for grading portions of the LARE exam. It is basically an overview of grading and drainage topics, but is well written and interesting. I would recommend getting this for studying the multiple choice portions and for Section E, you may need to get more in-depth and specific materials for Section E (I know I did!).

indispensable for would-be med students/doctors
By Ms. Guisella Ruiz
This is a very useful book for any high school student who is thinking of becoming a doctor or even for middle school students. It would also be helpful for young people already in medical school who want tips about how to successfully jump through all the hurdles and chose the right specialty. This book is like having about a dozen mentors who tell you everything they went through to get into some excellent medical schools and what they did to stay in and succeed, including right up to the point that they entered their professional practice. It has so much valuable and in some cases "inside" information such as how one school differs from another, how to best study for some of the main exams, how to prepare for a medical school and position yourself to get in. Perhaps most important, it explains to the reader what being a doctor--and a medical student--actually involved. Some young people will read this book and decide it is not for them. In which case they have saved tons of money and time. Those who decide it is for them will have gained some really valuable information that will help them in planning their futures.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw (Book 3), by Jeff Kinney

Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

Greg and his family and friends, who make the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books a must-read for middle school readers, are back and at their best in this hilarious new installment of the series, which is sure to please current fans while attracting new ones.

This highly anticipated third book in the critically acclaimed and bestselling series takes the art of being wimpy to a whole new level.

Publishers Weekly-1/19/2009:

The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney’s presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney’s spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year’s Day (he resolves to “help other people improve,” telling his mother, “I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly”) and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father’s attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg’s hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings (“Dear James, You smell”), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team’s perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the “racket” children’s book authors have going. “All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book.” Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8–12.

From Publishers Weekly
The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney's presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney's spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year's Day (he resolves to "help other people improve," telling his mother, "I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly") and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father's attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg's hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings ("Dear James, You smell"), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team's perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the "racket" children's book authors have going. "All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book." Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8-12.

From Booklist
For those wondering why tween boys don’t read very much, the answer is that more books aren’t like this. In this third (but not last, despite the subtitle’s implication) series entry, Greg Heffley, the Georgia Nicolson of American middle-school males, is just trying to get through life. In hilarious diary entries, he details his attempts to get along with his brothers; a potential romance; and his dad’s futile efforts to turn him into a jock, which reinforce Kinney’s well-realized theme that grown-ups just don’t get it. While diary may not be the most macho term, as Greg will be the first to tell you, the format certainly hooks the target audience with its printlike font, straightforward language, and copious cartoons. As the book opens, Greg is eschewing New Year’s resolutions: “It’s not easy for me to think of ways to improve myself, because I’m already pretty much one of the best people I know.” And while it is clear to all that he is no saint, he is real, and many kids will agree with that self-assessment. Grades 5-8. --Andrew Medlar

My Sides Hurt and Water Came Out of My Eyes
By Lynn Ellingwood
This is an amazingly funny book. The Wimpy Kid series should not be confined to people under 18 so I highly urge adults to read all three as soon as possible. My sides hurt and yes, my eyes watered. The book is so funny and each one is better than the last which means The Last Straw is the funniest so far. The author has a knack of mentioning things that kids and kids who have gotten older can all identify with. It's great. My favorite scene in this book was the gym class in which middle school students are urged by their gym teacher and other teachers to dance the Hokey Pokey! What a nightmare! What fun! Rowley is the sad sack friend who is embarrassing to be with and makes a great stooge for our hero. Mom is supposedly "hip" and so uncool that she needs to be kept in the house and not let out for activities that involve being "with it". Dad can't stay on a diet and Greg's New Year's Resolution is telling everybody else what's wrong with them! Just a wonderful book and I think that we will see more of them. This is truly a classic series and too good just to be isolated in the kids' section. Adults get your "Young Adult" reading done now! My excuse? I teach middle school.

Jeff Kinney Doesn't Wimp Out with Diary 3
By Paige Turner
Fantastic - as much fun as the first three. I was a real-life wimpy kid and I did end up at West Point so this installment was even more fun for me. My daughter loves this series. Jeff Kinney delivers again - the "Diary" is so funny and fast-paced that even "reading wimps" can't put the book down. The format of fun cartoon drawings and true-to-life stories that kids & adults alike can relate to make this a must-buy for your young reader. (Or adults that didn't totally grow up)

"I'm Already The Best Person I Know."
By Mel Odom
Greg Heffley, star of the Wimpy Kid books, is back in his third outing and he's brought a super-sized bag full of giggles and belly laughs with him. Just like the previous two books, he's not taking prisoners. He attacks readers, kids and adults, with commonsensical and unadulterated observations on how the world should work from a kid's point of view.

Jeff Kinney, the author and illustrator of the series, still hasn't given up his day job as a computer game designer despite the fact that all three of his books have ended up on the New York Times bestseller list. I've read interviews with him and he talks about how much he loves the job. But thankfully he also enjoys writing about the times and troubles of Greg Heffley.

Much of today's 9 to 12 year old fiction centers around fantasy and magic. I enjoy a lot of those stories as well. Most kids do. But the grandest fantasy of all for a kid, and maybe for some of us who've never grown up, is our own lives. Kinney really understands that and presents Greg's story with honesty and a real imagining of the world.

You don't find magical weapons or quests in the Wimpy Kid books. Well, unless of course Greg happens to be playing a role playing game with his friends (and sometimes his mom, a story you'll find in the second book). What you do get is a wonderful look into a kid's world that young readers will instantly recognize as their own and older readers will remember going through.

The books don't really have plots. They meander through things and Kinney manages to link threads of stories, making gags play over and over again by raising the stakes or giving them subtle and sneaky twists. Greg's perception of self and his place in the world is amazingly dead on. Not only that, but the author hangs out his own dirty laundry (literally, when Greg goes to school and a pair of dirty underwear with his name on it falls out of his pants leg because he's too lazy to do his own laundry) on the pages.

My eleven year old, who discovered the books first, got dibs on reading the book. He was home sick for the day and I took him with me to get my weekly allergy shot. I knew the book was out, had to have it, and picked it up at a local bookstore. I also picked one up for my wife's coworker's daughter. I had to share the goodness.

Chandler started and finished the book on Tuesday, then went back and reread his favorite parts. Several times during both readings he would come get me and share something that was going on. Normally that would irritate me to a degree. I like to read books on my own, without previews. But the Wimpy Kid books can be read again and again. They're even better when you share them with other people. We've also been calling each other PLOOPY for the last couple of days. You'll have to read the book to understand that reference.

One of the themes that Kinney returns to again and again in the book is the relationship between fathers and sons. As a father of four sons myself, I know there can be a lot of misunderstandings and disappointments. On both sides. But this book, and I don't know if Kinney intended it on purpose, presents a great argument for both sides--as well as a chance to get to understand each other. Sons need to know that their fathers were once upon a time boys like themselves, and fathers need to remember what it's like to be a boy. Boys don't really know how everything works or why everything's not about them or how they're supposed to fit in the world. And fathers...well, actually I guess that doesn't change much. Kinney provides enlightenment and reminder in one great and funny package.

The trick that the author manages to pull off so well is the presentation of serious material in a slapstick environment. People just reading the books for humor will get that, but Kinney writes so honestly that readers can't help noticing how much real life is packed into the pages.

I loved Greg's plan to learn to become a jumping king by digging a hole three inches deep in his backyard then jumping out of it a hundred times. The next day he would dig the hole twice as deep and jump out of it a hundred times again. By the end of the fifth day, he hoped to be jumping like a kangaroo. Of course, any adult would realize this was ridiculous, but it only takes a father about five seconds and a good dose of honesty to realize that at Greg's age he would have believed the same thing.

My wife is fourth grade teacher. She was out of town on Wednesday, but when Chandler and I talked to her, we told her about getting the new Wimpy Kid book. She was appreciative of my getting a book for her coworker's daughter, but she also asked me why I didn't pick up a copy for her class. At the time, I didn't think about it because my son and I were so involved flipping through the pages. So that went on my To-do List. Her class loves these books as well and they're always gone from her classroom library.

I also told my allergy nurse about them. She has a six year old who is an aggressive reader and likes to draw. Chandler and I even showed her our copy of the book. She was going to pick them up on her way home.

I tell everybody with kids about these books. They're written in a journal format, complete with lined pages. The art doodles are fantastic, simple and compelling. They're also easy enough that they can inspire the budding artist in every young kid. Young writers and artists both get a good role model to follow in these books while trying to express their own talents.

The beauty of these books is that you don't have to read them in any particular order. You can pick up any one on an impulse buy and rest assured that you or your child will enjoy it. The first two are out in paperback, but I'd really recommend picking the books up in hardcover. These are books that will sit on your shelves for a long time and will be constantly reread. They're excellent gifts to give to other children or grandchildren.

One thing that my son noticed that I didn't is the fact that the books each cover a season. The first book centered on Greg going back to school for the new year. The second book led up to Christmas. And the third book covers from New Year's to the end of the school semester.

Kinney is contracted for at least five of the books. That leaves two more to come, but in a recent interview he stated that he may do as many as seven of the books. I hope so because I'll be sad to see the Wimpy Kid grow up and no longer share his adventures with us.

    Good Book
    By Chris Cheon
Barron's review books never fail to meet the standards of delivery, organization, and amount of content. This particular book is no different. I have a Kaplan's SAT Subject Test Biology book at home, and it does not compare to this product in terms of quality and quantity. The key to SAT Subject tests are solving many many questions and many books do not have enough questions to practice. However, this book has a good amount of practice questions.

    Complete reference for subject test
    By Edward Brunton
I had to take a biology subject test mid year for one of the colleges I was applying to, so I got this prep book to learn the second half of the material. After studying from this book for about a month ahead of my January SAT, I managed to get a 730 on the Bio M exam. The material on the exam matched what was in this prep book very closely. My only complaint is that it did not describe the difference in how colleges perceive the Ecology vs Molecular exam scores as the curves are a bit different. Nevertheless, this prep book worked out well for me.

    Review
"STORM WATCHER is a brilliant and beautiful tale of how the simple, honest love of a dog can help a lonely boy find his way out of the darkness. Subtle, powerful and highly recommended."Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Flesh and Bone.

"I just finished reading STORM WATCHER and I loved it! Of course, I am a dog lover, so that aspect had great appeal. But I also liked the deeper themes about grief and recovery, and the complicated family dynamics. As I got closer to the end, I couldn't put it down! I'm so glad to read an emotional book from a boy's POV." Lee McClain, author of Sizzle.

"Snyder's lightning strikes again with STORM WATCHER's tale of ordinary people fighting to become heroes in the face of things they fear most. Luke's story is by turns funny, touching, and achingly real, as Snyder harnesses a lifetime of expertise about meteorology, dogs, and life in small towns." Morgan Keyes/Mindy Klasky, author of Darkbeast.

"This deftly plotted story will engage readers of both genders with its fresh storyline. When 12-year-old Luke Riley's mother is killed in a lightning-related accident, Luke's fear of severe weather is heightened and his grief is exacerbated by guilt, as he believes it was his panicked phone call to his mother that caused her to be out in the storm...Intertwining family relationships, weather science and search-and-rescue dog training, this coming-of-age story relays themes of friendship, grief, challenge, fear and responsibility without didacticism or melodrama." for teens
    By Kevin E. Davis
I was not the target audience for this book, but because it was by Maria Snyder, I bought it. It is about a 13 year old boy and his family. There is no magic here, just kids, adults, and dogs. It expresses very well the frustration of being a teen. There is adventure, love, conflict, and fun. I recommend it to teens and adults who enjoy YA fiction.

    A great read!
    By Kimberly C
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the synopsis. I knew it was written by one of my favorite writers, Maria V. Snyder. (If you haven’t checked out her Healer series, my personal favorite, then you should run out and grab them now!) I knew it was middle grade, and it was about dogs and the weather. It turned out to be so much more.

Having just lost his mother, Luke and his brothers live with their father who is a famous Search and Rescue leader. There’s a lot of family dynamics that are brewing just under the surface. Whether that’s Luke struggling with his own guilt and demons, or his interactions with his bullying brothers, or even his thin relationship with his father, the is a lot of emotion going on in this book. Luke blames himself for his mother’s death and is sure that his family blames him too. That’s certainly a lot to place on a young kid, who has no friends and a large anxiety towards thunderstorms.

But Snyder handles gentle Luke’s character gracefully, allowing his insecurities and flaws to shine through. The family’s grief is dark cloud, floating in and out of the atmosphere of the tale, making the family and their challenges very real to me. I wanted to slap awake Dad and tell his brothers to shut up. And that’s the beauty of the story. It resonated with me because the characters are so real, their motivations so clearly sprung from their loss.

The secondary characters are fun and full of life. The story brought me in and held me there, my heart cracking slowly for Luke and warming for the dogs. I am a dog person. Yes, I have rabbits. But I am a dog person. Snyder brings all of the sweet dogs to the forefront, loyal heroes who add yet another layer of warmth to this world.

I really enjoyed Storm Watcher, reading it in two nights as soon as I got home from work. It’s a satisfying book about family, love and grief.

... book I think my reluctant middle grade son will like. Luke is a likable character
    By MStutzgirl
I'm so excited to have found another book I think my reluctant reader middle grade son will like. Luke is a likable character, and I cared about him. The emotions were authentic without getting too mushy. The dogs, search-and-rescue missions, and weather tower add interest. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
