I'm kind of in shock
By Candace Lafleur
As someone going through illness and chemotherapy myself, the author's description and innate understanding of the desperation I feel completely gripped me. There were moments where I had to sit back and just absorb it all in, I could envision myself in the lead character's position so completely.

The story itself is wonderful - it kept me riveted and looking forward to my morning commutes where I could pick up my Kindle and read more, even to the point of being 'that' person on the escalator, obliviously absorbed in a book and knocking other commuters nearly off the platform (erm, sorry!).

Add that to the jaw drop of a last line in the book and this is sure to be one that I will always, always remember.

Touching thriller that raises many profound questions.
By Katerina Sestakova
This book is a medical thriller and the story is very engaging and interesting. It is about Erica, a young woman diagnosed with an advanced stage of pancreatic cancer. She is surprised to find her closest friend in her secretary whom she never truly appreciated before. This woman gives Erica some tips on alternative medicine. Erica’s last hope becomes a famous healer, but her journey is more complicated than it seems at first sight. The healer does not practice anymore. In addition, he commands complete surrender from his patients -- both emotionally and financially. While his fees may seem outrageous, he lives frugally and supports orphans in Africa. He is a typical guru with a huge ego, but he is also surprisingly humble at some moments. Nothing is as it may seem.

It is difficult to say more without giving spoilers, so let me just mention some themes instead of saying what exactly will happen. There is a conflict between alternative medicine and pharmaceutical industry. There is also a conflict between science and hope. While the patient is going through a dramatic transformation, so is her healer. He demonstrates a classical utilitarian conflict between his personal calling and a chance to do a greater good for a greater number by abandoning his mission and his unique gift. While the woman agrees to face her inner demons, this does not mean that she must win. Her healer seems to be at peace with himself and the world, but there seems to be a dark side to him as well. We learn some haunting secrets about his past, as the story unfolds. His future turns out to be equally surprising.

This is the first book by Christopher Fischer that I have read and I am truly impressed. It is much more than just a thrilling story. I will definitely read more books from this author.

Splendid
By Patrick
I took a punt on a new author to me and I was delighted that I did. This a book has an original plot that at the same time makes you feel like you already know the chief protagonists. From the opening page you are immersed into the story and what a story. I like to be drawn into a book but I need to be kept interested and I most certainly was.

No chance of spoilers from me, I would ruin the book for you if I did. All I will say is that the story centres around Erika, who choses to seek alternative treatment for her cancer. The alternative treatment she seeks and the deceit, plot twists and intrigue that follows, just mount up. I wanted to put the book away several times but kept going back for just one more chapter. You will love the flow of this book. Perfectly paced for me, a well balanced study in character I have become a Christoph Fischer fan today. If you are the sort of person who is afraid to take a risk with a new author, you need not worry, you are in safe hands. Pick this book up and look for his next one.

The Story of Film, by Mark Cousins

Anew edition of the most accessible and compelling history of the medium published, with an updated foreword by the author to accompany his 15-hour feature documentaryFilm critic, producer, and presenter Mark Cousins' historyshows how filmmakers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other. He demonstrates, for example, how Douglas Sirk's 1950s Hollywood melodramas influenced Rainer Werner Fassbinder's despairing visions of 1970s Germany and how George Lucas' Star Wars epics grew out of Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. The Story of Film is divided into three main epochs: silent (1885–1928), sound (1928–1990), and digital (1990-present), and within this structure films are discussed in chapters reflecting both the stylistic concerns of the filmmakers and the political and social themes of the time. As well ascovering the great American films and filmmakers, the book explores cinema in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and South America, and shows how cinematic ideas and techniques cross national boundaries. Avoiding jargon and obscure critical theory, the author constantly places himself in the role of the moviegoer watching a film, asking How does a scene or a story affect us, and why? Indoing so,he gets to the heart of cinematic technique, explaining how filmmakers use lighting, framing, focal length, and editing to create their effects. Clearly written, and illustrated withmore than400 stills, this bookis essential reading for both film students and the general moviegoer.

Good Book, Cheezy Cover
By Harlem Brother
I was looking for a good, current history of world film and ran across this one in the bookstore. The cartoony cover and the Jack Sparrow image made me immediately doubt whether this would be the serious overview I was looking for so I bought this in tandem with the "Oxford History of World Cinema" which takes rather a more academic and in-depth approach to film than this one.
I've been reading this book with pleasure over the last two weeks and can say it has brought a lot of aspects of film watching and appreciation to my attention. The author's style is engaging, weaving fluently through different directors, nations and genres. The focus is on more artistic, groundbreaking and influential works, taking the auteur approach - focusing more on the directors than actors or other facets of cinema. That's probably what I like most about this book, that it's a celebration of great artists, treated with great care and enthusiasm. The author's love of cinema and his passion for the art is evident throughout.
I'd say the average reader ought to have a decent viewing history to fully appreciate the book, say, at least the knowledge of some films from the likes of Pasolini, Bergman, Dreyer, Wilder, Ozu, etc. to fully appreciate the book, although no one genre, film or director is taken too in depth as it goes for a wider scope. The text is augmented by beautiful stills, much of it to highlight visual and technical changes throughout cinematic history. The physical quality of the book is great, with glossy pages and photos (If it weren't for that horrid cover art!)
On the not-so-positive side I was surprised to see Cassavettes barely mentioned and Peter Watkins' total omission from the book (which would support Watkins' and others' claim that he is the most marginalized director of the latter half of the twentieth century). There are many who consider Watkins the most important British director of his generation. How can the author slight such artists in a serious historical survey? The other complaint I have are the atrocious number of spelling errors of a very basic variety. It bcomes slitely anoyying aftar a wile.
If you're looking for a more technical, in depth or academic approach, then I'd suggest "Oxford History of World Cinema", but I think you'll find "The Story of Film" a more accessible and enjoyable read.

Cheesy Cover Art (which almost certainly wasn't the author's idea): 1/2 star

Emphasis on Style and Innovation in World Cinema
By Amazon Customer
Mark Cousins' impressive overview of the last 100+ years in world cinema is both engaging and meticulously researched. Unlike the frustrating collective anthology "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", "Story" is very much a personal project; as Cousins writes, his goal is to "open a door to the world of cinema and describe *a* reliable path through it" (emphasis mine). He's quick to point out that many beloved films and directors are missing from the text, and it seems pointless to try to quibble with his selections -- indeed, omissions seem inevitable in such a massive undertaking.

With that said, the book is not an entirely successful venture, primarily due to Cousins' frequent references to technological and stylistic innovations which the average reader (even the "intelligent general audience" member he appeals to) will find obscure, and which the more informed reader may quibble with. On page 482, for instance, he references "the unflattering honesty with which [Nan Goldin] films people and her habit of non colour-correcting sodium lighting" -- the majority of readers will have no idea what "sodium lighting" refers to, while photography buffs will argue that the available natural lighting Goldin relies on is likely tungsten, not sodium. Similarly, on pages 250-251, Cousins mentions that the lens used to film several sequences in Bresson's "Pickpocket" was "50 mm, which approximates human vision"; this estimation is only accurate for 35 mm still photography, but, more importantly, his point will likely be lost altogether on most readers. Ironically, I believe Cousins' explanations would benefit from *less* detail and more strategic scaffolding of the basic ideas he'd like to get across to interested readers.

Keeping in mind once again that Cousins very clearly stipulates that he's taking a "certain path" through world cinema, readers should note that many of the selections in his book will not necessarily be enjoyable to the average (again, even the average "intelligent") cinephile. Cousins' appreciation is more that of an art historian than a moviegoer. With that said, it's undeniably refreshing to see the more obscure gems of "third world" cinema given their due, even if most viewers will never find copies to rent.

In sum, this meticulously crafted book (albeit one full of typos, which should be addressed before a second printing) will excite and inspire most readers to watch -- and re-watch -- literally hundreds of diverse films. Years after taking my first film appreciation course in college, I've been reminded about the meta-narrative of movies over the ages, about how cinema often reflects diverse sociological concerns, and about how directors tend to build upon (or diverge from) their predecessors. It's an exciting story, and Cousins is a worthy, dedicated storyteller.

Brilliant alternative opinionated history of film
By Historied
The remarkable thing about this book is just how many must see movies it added to my list. It's coverage is genuinely global and covers the entire history of film world wide. I am not so sure about how well it fits film into the national histories of the countries concerned but any weakness in this area is more than made up with its focus on technique, scene analysis and simply throwing new light on familiar and unfamiliar films. An eye opener and it also has a good bibliography to assist further study. The related DVD documentary by Mark Cousins seems equally interesting from the four episodes I have so far seen.

Milk: The Biology of Lactation, by Michael L. Power, Jay Schulkin

After drawing its first breath, every newborn mammal turns his or her complete attention to obtaining milk. This primal act was once thought to stem from a basic fact: milk provides the initial source of calories and nutrients for all mammalian young. But it turns out that milk is a much more complicated biochemical cocktail and provides benefits beyond nutrition. In this fascinating book, biologists Michael L. Power and Jay Schulkin reveal this liquid’s evolutionary history and show how its ingredients have changed over many millions of years to become a potent elixir. Power and Schulkin walk readers through the early origins of the mammary gland and describe the incredible diversification of milk among the various mammalian lineages.

After revealing the roots of lactation, the authors describe the substances that naturally occur in milk and discuss their biological functions. They reveal that mothers pass along numerous biochemical signals to their babies through milk. The authors explain how milk boosts an infant’s immune system, affects an infant’s metabolism and physiology, and helps inoculate and feed the baby’s gut microbiome.

Throughout the book, the authors weave in stories from studies of other species, explaining how comparative research sheds light on human lactation. The authors then turn their attention to the fascinating topic of cross-species milk consumption―something only practiced by certain humans who evolved an ability to retain lactase synthesis into adulthood. The first book to discuss milk from a comparative and evolutionary perspective, Power and Schulkin’s masterpiece reveals the rich biological story of the common thread that connects all mammals.

Interesting look at the biology and evolution of milk
By Steve G
I enjoyed this book. I am a little surprised that a book just on milk could be that interesting. The book is really about the biology of milk, it’s evolution and constituents. There is little information on production or any commercial aspects. The information is discussed in a fairly conversational way, but a prior knowledge of biology would be very helpful in getting through the material. At times there is too much information, especially when authors Michael L. Power and Jay Schulkin compare the constituents of the milk of various species. Nonetheless I recommend this book for anyone interested in biology.

Wow!
By Jane in Milwaukee
Wow--the book is in English, German and French! I mean that literally--every title and caption is in all 3 languages and each page of text is divided into 3 columns, one for each language. This book is interesting just to see how much longer or shorter the passages are (French is almost always the longest).

This is a book that I got for Morris's influence on needlework. Then I saw the chapters on woven textiles, tapestry, carpets, calligraphy...wow. Then I found myself browsing the entire book because this man really was a genius. Some of his designs are over-the-top for me but that doesn't take away from his brilliance at all.

This is a nice, hefty book, filled to the brim with big, beautiful, breath-taking photos. You really get a sense of his style in all these arts.

The work of William Morris is shown beautifully in this gorg
By A Customer
I enjoyed both the text and the pictures in this book. Certainly this is a fine show of Morris's decoration. It is also a good starting place to begin exploring the Arts & Crafts movement that followed from Morris's work.

SO MODERN
By maurizio
We would need William Morris'ideas nowdays. He understood the importance of hands and mind in art and hated the guilty factories and industries that killed arts and crafts...that's why he is so modern...Was he wrong? Absolutely not!

Development of the Human Spinal Cord: An Interpretation Based on Experimental Studies in Animals, by Joseph Altman, Shirley A. Bayer

There exists a wealth of information about the development of the spinal cord in journal articles and monographs, yet this beautifully illustrated work is the first book devoted to this important topic. Because the developing human spinal cord cannot be subjected to experimental manipulations, the knowledge gained from experimental work in animals is applied here to an interpretation of the time course and mechanisms of spinal cord development in man. The book begins with a review of our current understanding of the structure and functions of the spinal cord. Special reference is made to the phylogeny of the vertebrate spinal cord because the authors' interpretation of the development and organization of the human spinal cord is specifically an evolutionary one. Following a detailed experiment-based account of spinal cord development in the rat, the development of the human spinal cord is described, illustrated and interpreted in separate chapters during three epochs: the first trimester (the embryonic period), the second and third trimesters (the fetal period), and the first year of postnatal life. Special attention is paid to such topics as neurons, and the growth and myelination of the ascending and descending fiber tracts of the spinal cord. The book ends with a correlation of the development of motor behavior with different stages in the morphological development of the human spinal cord during the embryonic, fetal, and postnatal periods. The successive acquisition of voluntary control over different parts of the body during infancy is correlated with the progressive myelination of the corticospinal tract.
* The book contains an extensive review of work on spinal cord organization and development throughout the 20th century.
* The interpretations are based on experimental studies of spinal cord development in the rat carried out by the authors and their associates.
* The histological material on human spinal cord development is the largest ever assembled and reproduced (combining the Carnegie, Minot, and Yakovlev Collections).
* The collected material (which varies in quality and some of it has begun to fade) has been digitized and electronically reprocessed for improved reproduction.
* Discrete components of the spinal cord and new developments are highlighted by color coding; typically on one side only, leaving the contralateral side untouched to allow the reader to use his own interpretation.
* Summary graphs are presented, many in color, to convey important structural relationships, developmental events, or theories.
* The authors revive a few forgotten theories and offer several new ones regarding the development and organization of the human spinal cord.
Development of the Human Spinal Cord will be of interest to developmental biologists, neuroscientists, embryologists, molecular biologists (those working on stem cell research), pediatric neurologists, pathologists, child and developmental psychologists, and their students and trainees.

Review
"Its 254 halftone images and line illustrations, many in color, are a visual feast that continuously whets the reader's appetite for further understanding of the topics covered: organization and development of the spinal cord, first in the rat and then in the human embryo and infant. I would
add that anyone studying semiotics or the conveyance of complex information would also do well to study the techniques employed so skillfully in this book."--Psychological Reports.

"There is alot to be admired about this book. The book is beautifully presented and the illustrations are excellent. The authors are recognized experts in the field and cover traditional morphological aspects of spinal cord development very well, making many thought-provoking
observations."--Brain

But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndic.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend...

Review
“A slam-bang good read that kept me up at night.”—Elizabeth Moon

“A rousing adventure…the kind of hero Hornblower fans will love!”—William C.

“The best novel of its type that I’ve read.”—David Sherman, coauthor of the Starfist series

“Military science fiction at its best.”—Catherine Asaro

About the Author
"Jack Campbell" is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer (and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis). As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels. He lives with his family in Maryland.

“Captain Geary, I wouldn’t blame you for wondering if you’d have been better off if we hadn’t found you. ‘Black Jack’ Geary, back from the dead to accompany the Alliance Fleet to its greatest victory.” Bloch closed his eyes for a moment. “Now I need to leave the fleet in the hands of someone I can trust.”
Geary grimaced, wanting to yell at Bloch, tell the admiral that the man he wanted to leave in charge of the fleet wasn’t the man actually standing here, that such a person had never existed.
He finally just nodded slowly. “Aye, aye, sir.”
“We’re trapped. This fleet is the Alliance’s last hope.” Bloch leaned close, speaking more softly. “Dauntless has the key onboard. Do you understand? This ship must get home. Somehow. The hypernet key must get back to the Alliance. If we can do that there’ll still be a chance.”
It wasn’t like Geary would be in charge forever. Bloch would negotiate with the Syndics, then return and be back in command. Geary would never have to learn any details about some “key” on the Dauntless that somehow related to a method of traveling between the stars, which was much more rapid than even the system-jump faster-than-light transportation used in Geary’s time.
“Yes, sir . . . ”

Fallen Fleet
By Mel Odom
Captain John "Black Jack" Geary received his field promotion after everyone thought he'd died in battle. Instead, he'd been in suspended animation for a hundred years when he was found and revived. During that century of warfare that passed, the Alliance struggled against the Syndic, falling prey to the same kind of methodology employed against them by their enemy. Promoted to Fleet Commander after a Syndic betrayal, Geary wants to save as many of his people as he can. Boldly, he begins a campaign that will strand them light-years from home, with the only way back through enemy-held territory. If the Alliance had been the same Alliance he had died for, the chances would be slim. But now the Alliance is a shadow of its former self, no longer a competent force, broken down into segments of selfish officers who won't take orders.

Jack Campbell is the pseudonym for an accomplished SF author. THE LOST FLEET: DAUNTLESS is the first book in a new series.

The authors handling of the military is pitch-perfect. He knows the rules and regs, and he conveys the feeling of battle and being under fire really well. More than the sheer action, move and counter-move, though, he also understand the politics of running a large force and dealing with the enemy in an honorable fashion. The "science" that he's set up to deal with his universe is intact and he adheres to it. Not only do readers learn that the rules of engagement do allow mercy to an enemy, but also that anything over .1 light-speed leaves every other starcraft blurred and in uncertain positions. The military and scientific applications of the story, dealing with honor and command as well as real physics regarding how fast light travels, come across as real. For a science fiction author, it doesn't get any better than that.

Geary's character is a little thin, as is the whole background of the Alliance and the Syndic. Hopefully future installments will illuminate a little more of what Geary gave up, where he came from, and what the societies are like -- other than just opponents.

Readers who enjoyed Robert Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS, Joe Haldeman's FOREVER WAR, John Ringo's Posleen novels and John Scalzi's OLD MAN'S WAR will enjoy THE LOST FLEET: DAUNTLESS.

Enjoyable read, good start to the series
By Amazon Customer
Good characters and fleet actions. Fleet actions felt "real" given some assumed restraints. There were times that immersion was broken, usually when I tried to follow the orders. Not sure if it was the lack of details (time 40 what? 40 seconds from receiving the message? 40 minutes from the start of the battle?) or just trying to wrap my head around relativity.

Not action packed but an interesting read none the less.
By Patrick A. Kellner
"Dauntless" The lost Fleet Book1 by Jack Campbell.

A war has been raging across the stars between the Alliance and the Syndics for 100 years now. The Alliance officers do there best to honor the memory of their most sacred hero Captain John "Black Jack" Geary who during the early stages of the war held off a force of Syndics that badly out numbered his fleet long enough for most to escape until his ship was eventually destroyed. As far as the Alliance knows Geary went down with his ship however that isn't the case; Geary has been suspended in hibernation sleep in an escape pod for the past hundred years and has only now been discovered by the Alliance. Now Geary through a turn of events is placed in charge of a new fleet. One who for the most part reveres him as a god even though he knows he isn't. It is Geary's task to keep this fleet alive and return it to Alliance space. In the mean time he will have to try to retrain and command a fleet who have lost most of the tactical fighting knowledge from Geary's time...

"Dauntless" was a very good read but be forewarned that it is not for everyone. Although the story is set in the middle of a war there isn't a substantial amount of action and the battles that do take place are comparable to reading a chess match. The story is actually more about Captain Geary and his interaction with the fleet and watching him deal with his shipmates who think he is some unstoppable god of war from the past when he in fact knows that is not the case. The war takes place in the back ground for the most part and works as a plot device that drives Geary. The battles all take place in space between large fleets and there aren't any close quarters fights explored.

The Good: The concept for the story was great in that it places this great hero of the past amidst the leaders of today and each is forced to examine the other. The history built for the Alliance and the fact that the reader is privy to the Geary's examinations of how things have changed is well done. Geary is the central and main character of the book and overall the character is well drawn.

The Bad: For me nothing. For some this book will be boring. The book focuses mainly on one character and the story is mostly about his attempting to interact with and control and the fleet and the action that does take place is like reading a chess match. If you are looking for an action packed thrill ride this isn't the one for you.

Overall: A great read. If the premise sounds interesting pick it up and give it a try.

Review

"Given the scope of conventional warfare and cyber warfare, at under 150 pages, the book takes a very high-level approach to the topic…For those looking for a general introduction to the topic, The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice is a good place to start."--RSA Conference.com, March 11, 2013 "This is a thin book on a broad and deep topic, which gave me pause initially, but as it turns out, the book is thoughtfully written and will definitely be useful for educating managers and security professionals who need to broaden their thinking beyond physical security. It provides a dozen pages or so on each of the big topics in computer network security…This book won’t give you everything you need to know for incident handling or certification, but it can serve as a first step in a manager’s education in computer network security."--Security Management.com

Good intro to cyber warfare
By Ben Rothke
The notion of advanced persistent threats (APT) and cyber warfare has reached the mainstream press. As nation states are attacking corporate networks, the need to take defensive action is an imperative.

In The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice, authors Steve Winterfeld and Jason Andress provide an introduction to the topic of the various aspects of cyber warfare.

Topics such as the basics of cyber warfare, military doctrine, cyber doctrine, offensive and defensive tactics, state-sponsored attacks, procedures and more are detailed.

Wikipedia defines cyber warfare as politically motivated hacking to conduct sabotage and espionage. It is a form of information warfare sometimes seen as analogous to conventional warfare. Given the scope of conventional warfare and cyber warfare, at under 150 pages, the book takes a very high-level approach to the topic, and lacks details necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

For those looking for a more compressive guide, books such as Inside Cyber Warfare: Mapping the Cyber Underworld and Reverse Deception: Organized Cyber Threat Counter-Exploitation may be better starting points.

For those looking for a general introduction to the topic, The Basics of Cyber Warfare: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cyber Warfare in Theory and Practice is

In this book, I learned how military doctrine assesses situational awareness of cyber-security threats in the context of the overall battlefield, which I can use when responding to incidents. Clarifying who the attackers are, how they behave, what targets attract them, and how defensive countermeasures could be easily disabled can provide greater comfort than reacting in isolation -- "Someone's shooting at us, raise the shields!" Not only does this book offer a basic understanding of how the United States is currently positioned to fight a cyberwar, without explicitly saying so, it points out where we are most vulnerable. We must band together to protect our critical infrastructure and maintain redundant and isolated communications networks for rapidly assessing damage and restoring our information supply lines. In case of a massive cyberattack, uncoordinated responses in isolation may only add to chaos.

Good intro---but missing content!
By Fleamarketshopper
Good introduction to the subject.

FYI--my book came without the "Appendix: Cyber Timeline." This is referenced several times in the book, but is nowhere to be found! Did the publisher just forget about the last few pages? I would have rated it lower because of this, but I didn't want the publisher's sloppiness to reflect poorly on the authors.

From Publishers Weekly
Presented as a series of notebook entries by the mentally and physically abused Julian Drew, much of Deem's (How to Read Your Mother's Mind) erratic first YA novel is written in a simple but irritating code. Numbers replace letters in particularly loaded words or phrases: "1M155U" is the equivalent of "I miss you" and 543 is "she" (meaning the woman Julian's father has married following Julian's mother's death). Gradually the reader comes to understand that Julian's father and stepmother starve him for days, make him sleep in an unheated garage and otherwise mistreat him. As Julian confronts his vast grief about his mother, he uses less and less of his code, finally dropping it altogether-but not before the reader's patience has been taxed. Julian's voice is disturbing yet brilliant-however, aside from its almost surrealistic climax and improbably promising ending, this dark book rarely rises above the level of a moody character study. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-A challenging and oddly compelling story of an abused teenager who fights a heroic battle to deal with his mother's death and to survive the mistreatment of one of the most vicious stepmothers in all of literature. NB, in Julian's shorthand, means notebook-the only means out of his profound loneliness and pain. His mother died when he was in the fifth grade, leaving him almost instantly in the hands of "stepnother." She locks him in his garage room, virtually starves him, and inflicts an endless string of verbal and physical abuses that drive him nearly to madness. NB1 expresses his complete isolation. In NB2, he begins to make contact with a girl in his Spanish class, his English teacher encourages his writing, and he gets a job. In NB3, it all falls apart and he runs away to Wheeling, WV, where his mother died. Here, his prophetic dreams of a letter from his mother, the book Portrait of Jennie, and his obsessive desire to go back in time to rejoin his mother converge. Instead, he nearly dies and is joined by Susan from Spanish class who has run away, pregnant, from her own destructive home to be with the "'weirdest, nicest person I've ever met and the biggest puzzle I've ever tried to solve.'" All of the characters, even the most minor, are surprisingly vivid and real. The plot structure and the parallels to Portrait of Jennie are consistent and logical, and they add an intriguing twist to Julian's search for his mother and his past. But best of all, Deem leaves enough literary space between dialogue and action for readers to infer character and emotion, which is a blessed relief from the heavy-handedness of so many YA novels. Overall, a well-written book about a character well worth knowing.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. Fifteen-year-old Julian, who lives with his indifferent father and demented stepmother, is a victim of emotional and physical abuse. Not only is he fed barely enough to sustain him, but he also is locked into the garage at night and forced to pee in a bucket kept in his room as a constant reminder of his subhuman status. The memory of his deceased mother and her love is Julian's primary source of strength, and coded notebooks ("NBs") written to her are his salvation. He exists like a prisoner of war for whom all communication is treacherous: it is not safe to "C" (cry) and too terrifying to express fantasies of "K177ing" (killing). It's sometimes difficult to make sense of Julian's special terms, especially at the outset, but the intensity and emotion behind the words are unmistakable and immediate. When Julian finally writes "I am an abused child," the strength, anger, and determination of a survivor emerges. Characterizations, including that of a caring but troubled classmate who becomes a kind of deus ex machina (rescuing Julian from the brink of self-destruction), are well done, but it is the unusual language that gives the story its power: the words evoke stinging layers of hurt and the galling horror of abuse, as well as the courage, hope, and tenacity needed to survive and escape. Holy cow. This is a good book.

I read part of this book and then had to go to work before finishing it. That was the longest shift I've ever had to work. Talk about hard to put down... it's gripping, compelling, and most of all, disturbing. But it sticks to you, somehow.

Great!
By Ashley Harmon
I read this book 2 years ago, and still I can not forget how good it was and how much it helped me understand there are other people out there going through the same things as I do and worse. I am now 14 years old, and couldn't image going through what Julian went through in this book, AFTER the death of my mother.

Although the book was kinda confusing in the beginning, I caught on. Deciphering each and every messaged coated with numbers and codes until I cracked each and everyone one of them and recorgnized them once I spotted them.

Author James M. Deem is without doubt the most amazing author I've ever read books from. Since this book, I look and look for his books and read them and never I repeat NEVER has he let me down. I think that everyone who reads his material should cherish it, and hold on to his thoughts [ they are amazing ] just as I have done, because he's simply...the best.
