Explains numbing asininities.

Well, I read this ageless but topical book of wisdom five years ago and it made a great impression on me and how to evaluate the state of the world today. Today's war for civilization made me read it again...to see if there is hope in the face of bombings, beheadings, appeasements of numbing asininity we read about in the daily news. It's thesis stays with me when I vote, when I evaluate bureacratic silliness, politician's worth,and my choice of where to live and do business. This book explains how a civilization can devolve or evolve through the decisions, actions, or indecison, inaction of those public servants who are not elected, but appointed.

Frederick Mosher's thesis is about how the bulk of governmental decisions and actions are determined and influenced by the background, associations and values of educated-or-not, un-elected, administrative officials.

The author reminds us that our government,and democracy should be *by" the people, as well as of and for the people; evidenced by our country's early hope to be governed by all the people such as in the New England Town meetings.

We can see how our direct democratic participation is first delegated to popularly elected representatives who then select and delegate powers to other officers. As the administrative tasks of government begin to outnumber the elective officers, a third step away from directly participative democracy is taken with the designation of un-elected, un-removable administrators who are chosen merely on criteria of social class, family, general competence and special skills.

Mr Mosher makes it clear that in every developed country in the world the vast majority of public officers are in this last class. They have specialized skills and competences that the elected officials do not usually possess, and it is obvious that this third tier of public officers make decisions of great significance for all the people.

The book examines just how this disparate assembly of the elite specialists and professionals exposes a glaring need for generalists, which, if included, these generalists could thus beget a strong bureaucracy which instead of being a threat to democracy, becomes its greatest pillar... if sufficiently represented.In other words the educational process through which professionals are produced needs broadened, more humanizing education programs.

The author's conclusion discusses how the public officer's decisions usually will require some kind of interpretation of the public and public interest! This will depend principally upon the system of education. There is (or there should be) high ethical content in most significant public decisions. A basic standard of justice for value-laden decisions demands fairness and charity! Ultimately the possibilities of a truly democratic public service would depend upon individuals from all walks of life progressing to higher education, and of course, would depend upon the bias or un-biased orientation they receive in universities!

This book can be a valuable reference for the way to sanely administer a growing and productive society. It answered my questions about how democracy could really, finally work despite the broad range of voter's mentalities, apathies, knowledge and bias'. Thanks for the glimmer of hope.

How are our memories, our narratives, and our intelligence interrelated? What can artificial intelligence and narratology say to each other? In this pathbreaking study by an expert on learning and computers, Roger C. Schank argues that artificial intelligence must be based on real human intelligence, which consists largely of applying old situations - and our narratives of them - to new situations in less than obvious ways. To design smart machines, Schank therefore investigated how people use narratives and stories, the nature and function of those narratives, and the connection of intelligence to both telling and listening. As Schank explains, "We need to tell someone else a story that describes our experiences because the process of creating the story also creates the memory structure that will contain the gist of the story for the rest of our lives. Talking is remembering". This first paperback edition includes an illuminating foreword by Gary Saul Morson.

Roger C. Schank is Director of the Institute for Learning Sciences and John Evans Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Psychology, and Education at Northwestern University. People's primary way of learning is through hearing stories.

I read this book for one of my instructional design classes - which focuses on how people learn - it is one of the most interesting books that I have ever read. It gives you alot to think about. I think the best way to learn about a non-fiction book is through a series of quotes of what the person found interesting. So here are some quotes from the book:

"In effect, once she decided to see their situation as one of betrayal, she didn't need to see it any other way. Aspects of the relationship between the two people unrelated to betrayal, or that contradicted the notion of betrayal, were forgotten. Seeing a particular story as an instance of a more general and universally known story causes the teller of the story to forget the differences between the particular and the general.
....In other words, the concept of betrayal becomes what she knows about this situation. It controls her memory of the situation so that new evidence of betrayal is more likely to get admitted into memory than contradictory evidence."(P.148)

"...Is this relationship, however, an example of betrayal? Certainly, the teller relates the story so that betrayal is an accurate description. But betrayal was used as a skeleton story around which the actual story was constructed.
In other words, by using a skeleton story for betrayal, the teller could only construct a story of betrayal. All other aspects of the story were left out. But why, for example, could the teller not have told a story of "devotion"? Only small changes would be needed to make this a story of devotion - a statement that he still loves her and hopes that she will return to her former self or one that shows he values and will support her in her role as mother. ....We want to see the situations that we encounter in terms that are describable to others. We only have a short time in which to tell these stories. So, even if the fit with those stories is not exact, seeing and describing complex stories in terms of standard stories provides an easy shorthand method for communication." (P.148-149)

"The key point here is that once we find a belief and connected story, no further processing, no search for other beliefs need be done. We rarely look to understand a story in more than one way." (p.73)

"The skeletons we use indicate our point of view. Storytelling causes us to adapt a point of view. With this adaption comes a kind of self-definition, however. We are the stories we tell. ...As we come to rely upon certain skeletons to express what has happened to us, we become incapable of seeing the world in any other way. The skeletons we use cause specific episodes to conform to one another. The more a given skeleton is used, the more stories it helps form begin to coher in memory. Consequently, we develop consistent, and rather inflexible points of view." (P.170)

"An incident is remembered in terms of how it is seen in the first place. That is, labeling is in many respects an arbitrary process. ...And, of course, even that last categorization is arbitrary since one person might characterize the victim as being blond, while the other might characterise him as being fat." (P.222)

"We would like to imagine that we learn from the stories of others, but we really only do so when the stories we hear relate to beliefs that we feel rather unsure of, ones that we are flirting with at the moment, so to speak. When we are wondering, consciously or unconsciously, about the truth, about how to act or understand some aspect of the world, then the evidence provided by others can be of some use." (P.78)

"A good memory, then means an attentive labeling facility during processing or you aren't going to remember what you don't find interesting, so the more that interests you the better memory you are likely to have." (P.223-224)

"Yet what we learn is still entirely up to us. No one teaches us how to index after all. We make up our own way of seeing the world,..." (P.113)

"Knowing a great deal about a subject means being able to detect differences that will reflect themselves in differences in indexing. In other words, intelligence depends on clever indexing. Our expert is intelligent about military history. He sees nuances where others would not. He analyzes new stories well enough to be able to relate them to old stories that might not obviously be the same." (P.113)

While producing her steampunk comic, BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY, Madeleine has successfully funded three Kickstarter campaigns and taught Kickstarter seminars geared toward the independent creator at Pulp Fiction Books and Comics in Culver City.

Required Reading

If you are a planning to to launch your first Kickstarter, you owe it to yourself to read this book. Madeleine lays out the whole process and what you can expect for every step of the way. I've read a few 'Kickstarter' books, most of them are geared toward large projects or people that have large followings already. This book tells you where to start, from scratch with nothing but your project. I had no idea how Kickstarter functioned, no real following, or how I would be able to fund my comic-book project. After reading and re-reading this book, I put her suggestions into place. I am happy to say, three months later, I have launched a Kickstarter. I was 80% funded in 24 hours and fully funded within 40. I am still referencing the book everyday as the campaign continues. Cannot recommend this book enough.

An easy to read book of what worked well for the writer as well as direction on what to do to adapt to yours. I just launched my first kickstarter using some of the suggestions from this book and some other kickstarter creators and with 39 days to go i'm already a quarter funded. Very basic info, and somewhat insulting to the intelligence of anyone who has worked in luxury for more than a few months. It reads more like a series of blog posts (and not very well thought out ones at that) than a cohesive text. Still, an easy read if you have no idea what luxury service is about.

This is one the excellent readings I have come across recently. It is crisp, no unnecessary jargon, easy to understand by any layman, and extremely useful for anybody who is in business , right from the CEO to the lowest level of the staff, since I believe that everybody in an organization should first of all be a SALES person, and then comes next his / her departmental duty, after all sales is the starting point for any money to flow into the organization , which will keep it alive and kicking. This book addresses about selling luxury items, but the same principles apply to selling anything, because, by implementing the principles outlined in this book, one makes the customer feel that bit EXTRA SPECIAL.

About the Author
Annie Matan is a researcher and lecturer at Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute in Australia, interested in creating sustainable, vibrant and people-focused urban places. She has worked in state and local government, and joined CUSP in 2011 after finishing her PhD at Curtin University. Peter Newman is the Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University and former Director of CUSP. Peter has worked in local government as an elected councillor, an advisor to three Western Australia State Premiers and was on the Board of Infrastructure Australia from 2010 to 2014. He was a Lead Author for Transport on the IPCC. He has written 17 books including The End of Automobile Dependence.

About the Author

Koushik Sinha is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA. He has more than a decade of R&D work experience at several renowned organizations such as Qatar Computing Research Institute, Hewlett-Packard Labs, and Honeywell Technology Solutions. He was also a Visiting Scientist at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore. His current research areas include secure and energy-efficient wireless communication in ad hoc and sensor networks, mobile computing, and social computing. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Sasthi C. Ghosh is a faculty member at the Advanced Computing and Microelectronics Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, India. Prior to that, he worked on UMTS network design as a Research Associate in the School of Computer Science, Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. He also visited the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Ontario, Canada and the Institute of Mathematical Science, Chennai, India. His current research interests include UMTS network design, wireless mesh networks (WiFi & WiMax), mobile computing, and wireless networks.

Bhabani P. Sinha is a professor at the Advanced Computing and Microelectronics Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. He also holds a Distinguished Adjunct Professor position at the National Institute of Technology, Arunachal Pradesh, India. He was an Indian Space Research Organization Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. He was a Humboldt fellow of Germany and also a visiting faculty of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, University of Central Florida, Orlando, and Clemson University, South Carolina. He has more than forty years of research experience in the areas of computer architectures, algorithms, parallel and distributed computing, mobile computing, and wireless communication. He served as an editor of the IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems and as a subject area editor of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, USA.

Revolutionizing the Corporation

I just finished reading Reengineering The Corporation by Michael Hammer & James Champy. Organizations have been traditionally structured around the division of labor, as introduced by Adam Smith. This principle stated that people work most efficiently when they have only one well understood task to perform. While this specialization has led to local effectiveness on the given task, it created complex processes to knit and combine all these simple processes together. This has for the most part created inconvenience, inefficiencies and higher cost for their respective companies and customers. From a customer viewpoint, only the overall process matters, and success is achieved when the good or service is delivered to them quickly, at the right cost and quality. While in the last century corporations were able to get away with having complex processes and inefficiencies today's forces namely "the Three Cs": Customers, Competition, and Change are driving them into unchartered teritory.

What the authors introduce is the principle of Reengineering. They define reengineering as " the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary, measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service and speed." Although the definition sounds simple, the consequences run very deep. It involves every aspect of a company's inner working such as: organization structure, empowerment, career paths, the role of information technology etc. The book goes on to detail general principles on some common themes that evolve from such exercises such as who will reengineer, which opportunities to tackle, the enabling role of IT etc. Finally despite the fact that every company will have individual nuances when it embarks on such an effort, the authors do give some example companies that have undergone and continue to undergo reengineering efforts (Hallmark, Taco Bell etc.).

One of the key learnings for me, coming from an IT background is how the authors think about IT within the reengineering effort. While they do acknowledge that IT is a great enabler of reengineering, it is by no means sufficient in and by itself. Companies that simply automate parts of a process or install systems without rethinking the processes and people around them do not reap the desired benefits and do not achieve dramatic improvements.

This is a truly revolutionary book in this area, given both the scope and impact its principles can have on a corporation and how we think about them. A highly recommended must read!

Stands the test of time

There are some books that introduce new concepts or approaches that lead to changes in the way we view the world around us. Some are fads and quickly disappear into a footnote, while others become part of a stream of thought that transforms the way we manage. Reengineering the Corporation is one of the latter types of books. While it was often used as prescriptive at the time it was introduced in 1994, it has become more about the paradigms of how we view the concept of how change is designed, led and measured in business. With the advent of broad integrated business systems that logically define many business relationships, the approach recommended in the initial printing has had to evolve to accomodate the development in IT applications, however, the concept of radical change presented here remains a valuable point on the timeline of the evolution of business process managment thought. The book is well worth rereading.

A Business Process Reengineering Classic

Michael Hammer is the guru of business processes. Though the first edition of the book was written in 1998, the content in the book are timeless and are equally valuable and applicable today. The core idea of the book is to forget the assembly-line and specialization-oriented process design, which clouds the overall goal of producing superior output and customer value-add. Assembly-line mentality promotes specialization and gives rise to narrow job focus, which leads to misaligned incentives and undermines the overall goal of delivering value to customers. Instead, the author proposes that processes be innovated and radical re-designed and integrated horizontally. This is a classic book on business process and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in this subject.

I'm not gonna lie, after the execution of Potter at the end of 'Dead Water' I was more than a little anxious going into this, there is only so much my poor little shriveled heart can take. This book starts off prior to that very public, very heartbreaking turn of events. Being back in Potter's head after mourning his loss was thrilling, hilarious & devastating all at the same time. I'm admittedly a little emotionally strung out, so my review may be a but jumpy-sorry. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Potter and Jack Seth's interactions with each other. It was very reminiscent of Murphy, but much more violent Lol

With my eyes fixed on Potter, I headed straight for him. Curling my bony fingers into a fist, I punched him squarely in the face. There was a cracking sound as my fist crunched into the flat of his nose and he shot back down the corridor, landing on the floor.
"What the f*** was that for?"
"It made me feel better"
"No wonder my f****** nose looks the way it does. What, with Murphy's driving and people queuing up to take pot-shots at me the whole f****** time..."
"Maybe you shouldn't be such a prick, and perhaps people wouldn't feel the need to slap you so much."
"Who are you calling a prick...?"

This book reminded me a little of Harry Potter & the prisoner of Azkaban (think Hermione's time-turner, that's all I'm saying). Lots of action and plenty of mystery but most of all were the chills I've come to expect. The scariest part of these books is the huge amount of unknowns, especially with the characters. You really can't trust anyone or anything, as soon as you do it bites you in the arse and that is what keeps me in suspense the most. As soon as you think you have something figured out, you're proved wrong in the worst possible way. We also get to venture back into Jack Seth's head here and that whole experience caught me off-guard. Besides finding him surprisingly quite funny at times, disturbing at others, it becomes quite clear something has changed with him since being holed up with Kiera and re-living his story. He was trying to break her by revealing their true relationship and the secrets of her past, but I think maybe she got to him instead.

'Who was I trying to kid? I'd forgotten how to be good a whole lifetime ago. Being good didn't come easy to me. I struggled with that.'

With so many surprising twists this series will do your head in, this installment was no exception. I think I actually tried to reach into my Kindle at one point to unmask the damn photographer myself - I NEEDED TO KNOW WHO IT WAS!! And again with the friggin cliffhanger - you're gutting me O'Rourke!! I'm desperate for the next book but dreading it too because I absolutely do not want this series to end, I cannot say good-bye, we've been through sooo much with these people, can you see my struggles? Are they clear enough?? See....MENTAL! I cannot say this enough -if you haven't started this series yet, why the hell not?!?? Stop reading this review, go get 'Vampire Shift' and get started on this incredible journey. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

Now I have to be honest, at first I didn't feel excited about this because I feel like is just "killing time" instead of sticking with the essentials and working on the ending. But as DEAD PUSH unfold, I realize why this novel is important. Potter and Seth's objective was to find the Photographer and since they failed to do that there's no real resolution here. They did manage to discover a lot of things, especially with regards to those blasted Elders, but aside from that, DEAD PUSH was really about character self-checks for both Potter and Seth. We can expect Potter to make amends for Kiera, Seth on the other had is a wild card. Who knows what he's going to do next.

DEAD PUSH may have veered off a little bit from the main plot of the series but I think it changed the game in some ways. How? We'll find out in Dead Lost coming soon.

I have written so many good reviews about this series, I would just be repeating myself if I try to tell you how great these books are. I even talk about this series when I rate other authors, because very few can compare to Tim's books. I am so sorry to have this series end. Tim don't make us wait too long for book eight. As SOON as I read that book I will start re-reading the entire series from the beginning.

Here is a question for other readers. How many times did you want to beat the hell out of Potter and Jack? I just kept saying, please don't do it!
