Reuel B. Parker has spent a lifetime building, repairing, restoring, designing, and cruising in sail- and powerboats. Author of The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding (International Marine, 1990) and of numerous articles for WoodenBoat and Boatbuilder magazines, he has been a devotee of sharpies since his childhood on the shores of Long Island Sound. He is currently putting the finishing touches on a 60-foot Virginia pilot schooner; he plans to move his design business aboard and go cruising.

A niche book, covering its subject completely, although it is not a big thick book. Glad to have purchased it and glad that it was written. Lots of detail about sharpie sailboat construction, design, history, and amusing anecdotes. A good gift for the boatbuilder or boat designer. Just ask Bruce Kirby (Laser).

Required reading if thinking about building a sharpie

Good book. Got a little technical in places and could have used illustrations to clarify verbiage; however I would concise it required reading if one is planning on building a sharpie.... Even if you are not using Parker's plans.

Great background for boatbuilding

I think the kernal of this book is the description of why plywood is a superior boat building material. (diagonal strength) I had been thinking of carvel planking as the best type of wood construction. I was wrong. Other than that, the book does a great job of describing the history of, and reason for, sharpies.

From what I read, I decided that a deeper, heavier, and stronger boat might be more appropriate for the inside passage to Alaska. Also, I'm just not short enough to spend much time in the cabin of a sharpie.

Good book, good read, and I will be buying the Ruel Parker book on cold molding.

Lizard Wisdom: A Review of The Ayahuasca Sessions by Rak Razam

In my previous article “20 Essential Books on the Mysterious Power of Ayahuasca”, Rak Razam (one of the co-coiners of the term “entheodelic storytelling” along with Graham Hancock, Jeremy D. Johnson and I) had the great honor of having two books on the list; The Ayahuasca Sessions and Aya Awakenings (now a documentary). On May 27th, 2014, The Ayahuasca Sessions received a proper reprint from North Atlantic Books, which includes a much improved cover and stunning full color photo inserts, not found in the older, now out of print version.

Sessions skirts around some of the central paradoxes of ayahuasca tourism. Early in the book Rak prompts Guillermo Aravelo to admit that the vine itself is the shaman and initiator, and the shaman is only the facilitator (the one that is often needed). Controversially, I myself am a solitary drinker and have no intention of traveling to some remote location when I’m able to safely commune with the plant spirits that I’ve already developed a relationship with in my own garden, though before coming to the medicine I had extensive history with an esoteric initiation into Hindu mysteries, so I was not without some preparation for the inner demons that assail those traversing the inner planes. I do not intend to discourage those who want a more traditional experience in Peru or Brazil, especially for the first time, but I do not see either path as having more or less spiritual import and value.

The great strength of the interviews found Sessions is its down to earth conversational style, which works in bridging the gap between indigenous curanderos, Western shamans, and ayahuasca authors. Rak’s talk with Jan Kounen was of particular interest to me as a graphic novelist who is interested in incorporating the holographic visions of the grandmother vine into visual art, and while I won’t spoil it, I think that it’s his best interview by far, from an insider ayahuasquero point of view, rather than the typical celebrity obsessed media culture plugs one often finds relating to film.

Another strange striking example of surreal synchronicity is hearing Adela Navas de Garcia, a curandera from the Amazon, talk about seven songs that came to her from the multidimensional lizards and snake totems that are relatively common in the thralls of the aya trance. As the seven Lizard Kings factor into my graphic novel KALI-YUGA—penned well before I met Rak—this was a welcome addition to what I could explore and reference within the deep non-linear structure of the comic.

Apparently, the spirit-reptiles taught Adela seven icaros, known as the magical songs that are meant to lead the shaman into deeper levels of trance in innerspace, in order to give power over shamanic totems and protection in order to ward off negative entities. She also states quite emphatically “shaman women can be better healers.” Be ye wise as serpents, indeed.

Other myths and common misunderstandings about the medicine are dispelled right away, such as the oft-cited purge, which many California bros are quick to point out, that “they wouldn’t want to be s***ting and puking their brains out while tripping, man.” Fortunately, those that have done more than simply read on the subject know that the initial cleansing stage—wherein the spirits literally force you to throw away the black-energy vibes that many of us have picked up simply by existing in Western civilization— can be relatively quick for some people. Graham Hancock relates that he stopped having deep purging around the 10th ceremony or so, and I have experienced a similar indication that heavy purging does not last forever, allowing for a more enjoyable “walk to the other side of reality”, as Hancock calls it.

Getting to the heart of the central metaphysicality of the medicine is one of Rak’s fundamental strengths as both a student and teacher. In a later part of his interview with Guillermo, he asks about the deeper aspects of the spirit planes that lie beyond the more commonly referenced astral planes (such as the causal plane, as depicted in various comparative cosmological maps at kheper.net/topics/planes/.) In the causal plane it is said that a single thought may become an entire universe for the soul to be trapped in, and in the dimensions of pure spirit that lie beyond all causality there is the idea that the spirit is beyond all duality, or beyond the language of heaven and hell most commonly found in the astral universe. According to Peruvian curanderos these are not mere metaphors, but tell-tale experiences and signposts of deep innerspace exploration lying within the sacred medicine.

For those that are already familiar with the subject matter, Rak goes far deeper in The Ayahuasca Sessions than most books I’ve encountered on the subject, as he is not afraid of controversy. For the new comer, it is perhaps the best introduction because of it’s wide scope within the singular focus of the esoteric mysteries. Sessions, like the vine itself, works on a heart-chakra based, conversational level approach, honed in on the lived experience of the medicine path itself—not merely the seemingly detached scholarly explanation of it. From this point of view it is essential reading material, and I highly recommend it.

Couldn't take it seriously

Based on some of the earlier reviews here, I was expecting to read a book that was revolutionary in the way it presented the philosophy of Luciferianism. What I found instead was a book rife with spelling errors, punctuation and grammar mistakes along with a "philosophy" that is nothing new if you've read the likes of Crowley, Spare, etc. I got a little over halfway through the book (in one sitting) before I decided I just couldn't take it anymore.
I couldn't believe that an organization (the GCOL) that is trying to be taken seriously would release this as their introductory text. It felt like my old middle school friends and I decided to start a church and wrote a book.
You may find a couple of interesting tidbits regarding the mythology of Lucifer but the mistakes make it so hard to read that it's not worth your trouble. I really hope that the GCOL at least invests in a decent editor for the next version of this book.

A Review of Wisdom of Eosphoros: The Luciferian Philosophy

Sometimes a book comes out about Luciferian Ideas, and Lucifer himself, that is filled with technical jargon,ritual and the fluff that only a Cambridge graduate can even begin to understand...This is Not that book.A clear and concise outline of the philosophy of the Greater Church of Lucifer,written in everyday language yet filled with facts on the history of Lucifer and the way that you would go about bringing about your own Luciferian Ascension,with or without ritual.Luciferian principles march with vigor along side such concepts as the NLE ( new luciferian era),the Mayan calendar,The Critical Mass theory, Aleister Crowley's Thelemic Aeons and the Precession of the Equinoxes.This book gives a core foundation for the Greater Church of Lucifer to grow from, and a way for the beginner on the Left Hand Path to apply this philosophy to his or her life.With tools like the 11 points of Power and Mental Vibrations,the new seeker of the black light can dig deep into the self and find the Truth.When you cut away all the Hyperbole about the Luciferian way,that is what is left behind,the truth that each man and woman seeks within themselves.And this text is a wonderful first step in that process.Self-liberation is the key to such a step,and this book gives you a way to find those next steps that you must take without doing the work for you.Like any good book on the path,it evokes more questions then answers,and in my opinion that is a very good thing.Mastery over your own world can only come by questioning the life you lead and the philosophy that you espouse.To question the Luciferian way IS the Luciferian way,and it is quite refreshing that the Greater Church of Lucifer has the moxie to point that out. I hope to to see more from this organization and plan on keeping an eye on their publications for quite some time to come.In conclusion,I feel that this work would be a fine addition to any man or woman's collection on philosophy and the occult,the Left Hand Path needs more books like this one,I tip my Hat to the authors,and recommend it highly to any seeker of knowledge and subjective truth,as if there was any other kind of truth to seek.-By Vincent Piazza

Finally, a book that clearly defines Luciferianism

I have so long awaited a clear book on Luciferianism it's not even funny. I have been following this current for awhile but when I had to actually explain Luciferianism to someone else, I found I didn't really have a clear definition of it myself.

This book takes out the unnecessary and confusing elements of Luciferianism and gives you a clear philosophical foundation that anyone can (and should) base their lives on. There is no mention of ritual or magic, and there doesn't need to be.

If you are looking for a collection of rituals with unclear direction, pick up one of Michael Ford's many other books. If you are looking for a book that will change your philosophy on life for the better, pick up this book.
