Excellent Resource for Mentors and Leaders
By Jason Raasch
SHORT REVIEW: This book is well worth reading, particularly if you are interested in learning more about what makes you "tick" and if you are looking for tools to effectively guide the development of people you are leading.

LONGER REVIEW: I must say I was a little skeptical at the beginning, particularly given the sub-title "achieving more by thinking differently". The world needs no additional "how to get ahead" books (particularly ones where focus is "how to get MORE for ME"). HOWEVER, the discoveries along the way (including the authors' background and mission) changed this early perception.

The book is written by founders of Mind Gym, a U.K.- and U.S.-based consulting firm which has developed a variety of products for professional development. These products (ranging from video modules to conferences) are based on decades of published research in clinical and business psychology. Some concepts will likely be new but you will undoubtedly recognize themes made popular by authors ranging from Zig Ziglar and Steven Covey to T. A. Harris (author of "I'm Ok, You're Ok published in1969). Where Mind Gym is intended to differ, however, is by providing not only the "what" we need to do to grow, but the "why" we act as we do now and the "how" to think differently and change.

The book is divided into several stand-alone sections covering a variety of topics including mindset, communication, creativity, and conflict. These sections may be read sequentially or can be studied individually should the reader want to jump to specific area of interest.

I was immediately enlightened in "Flip the Switch on Automatic Thinking" by the authors' demonstration of how our "internal dialogue" impacts the outcome of what we do. "Think Like an Attentive Optimist" changed my assumptions about the power optimism and pessimism. I was surprised in "Detoxifying Relationships" by identifying with the "poisons" we often reach for in communication. Most profound was the discomfort I felt reading about the roles of 'persecutor', 'rescuer' or 'victim' I play in my relationships. As difficult as it was to read, I realized acknowledging it is essential for my growth.

Finally, there are exercises at the end of each chapter that demonstrate how to put the information into practice on a daily basis. These are excellent ways to make the content "hands-on".

As I read Mind Gym I repeatedly thought about it's utility as a tool for personal development AND it's potential as a "textbook" for a leader or mentor to use to guide the development of a young (or young-at-heart) team. Once you read it you'll be compelled to check out the Mind Gym organization's website (http://us.themindgym.com/home/) and realize the book just scratches the surface of the resources available.

Mixed bag of advice but still worth the read
By bronx book nerd
It was a bit of a roller coaster ride reading this book because there is a lot of good information in it mixed in with some mediocre material. On the good side, the authors provide an excellent summary of John Gottman's work and how making the right types of "bids" in the right proportions can help a relationship (especially a marriage). The chapters on creativity are also helpful and consistent with a lot of the literature that exists on this topic. The chapter on procrastination and the way certain ingrained forces, especially the graphic illustrating the point, keep us from moving forward, was particularly enlightening. Where I had problems was with the authors' chapter on personality types. I disagree with any attempt to pigeonhole humans into neat categories or labels. In their scheme, the authors identify the carer, the driver, the professional and the adapter (a blend of the first three). Reading the description of each feels like reading horoscopes. In my opinion, people are a jumble of behaviors, attitudes and mindsets, all subject to various circumstances, including the flux of health, time of day, etc. These neat categories are almost fantastical and therefore not very helpful. Also, whenever writers present these categories, they always offer one of two fallback positions: 1) a person is not just one of these but a mix; or, as the authors do here 2) a mixed category that incorporates the others. There is also some advice that is almost loopy: roll your eyes to express disappointment and visualize a shield to deflect insults mentally. The best insight in the book was the line from the influence chapter - "People make decisions for their reasons, not yours.", which you must take into account when trying to change someone's mind. As you can see, this book has the good, the bad and the loopy, but it's till worth the read.
