Not Just For Chess Players

I got into this book first off by reading Frances Parkinson Keyes' novel THE CHESS PLAYERS, in which the game itself takes back seat to the rather romanticized life and loves of Paul Morphy. And then when I was working my way through the papers of the American poet Jack Spicer, I found out that on his deathbed he kept a few books on chess, among them this book, in its 1957 incarnation which looks pretty much the same as this one except the chess pieces are all shadowed in a thick claret-like red instead of the cool blue we have now.

I decided to get a replica of Spicer's copy and see if I could follow it and somehow see how he (Spicer) used chess, and in particular the legend of Paul Morphy, in his extremely difficult poetry. He was attracted I think to Morphy in the same way as he found Rimbaud so intriguing: in both cases an exhibition of brilliance, nearly of genius, while both men were very young, teenagers I guess, and then only a few years later a renunciation so extreme it amounted to burn-out, a psychic fatigue. Sergeant's annotations I find helpful, as well as his reasoned and well-argued account of Morphy's rise and fall as a grand master. What makes us turn away from the thing we do best, and go into trade? At least Rimbaud had reason to enter the mercantile world, for he was a poor boy and needed money for his family. But Morphy apparently was a scion of American aristocracy and would be counted a millionaire in today's money.

I found it interesting that they were annotating his games when he was a mere 13 years of age! AND that the games he played in blindfolds were among his best. If chess relies as much on memory as computers do, perhaps it would not matter to a clear brain like Morphy's how many games he was playing at once (in London he played five men simultaneously, two wins, two losses, one draw)--not exactly bukkake by the standards of today, but as Sergeant reminds us, he was playing the absolute top masters of his time. I love the idea of Game LXXIX, the opera house game, played in the royal box of the Duke of Brunswick at the Paris Opera House during a performance of Rossini! You can practically hear the triumphantly comic strains of THE BARBER OF SEVILLE in the air as you read the long columns of Morphy's assault. (He won of course.)

Morphy - No better player to learn from!

Before we go any further, I want you to know I am a Chess Master and I teach chess for a living.
All my students who have purchased this book have loved it.
All the great teachers of the game (GM L. Evans, SM Ken Smith, IM Silman, GM Soltis, GM Alburt; etc.) say you must FIRST master tactics before you can do anything else. This is the MANDATORY first step in the game of chess.
The best way to learn and master TACTICS is to study the OPEN GAMES. In my own opinion, there is no better way to do this than to study the games of Paul Morphy very carefully. (I personally believe Morphy was - easily - the greatest chess player who ever lived. See my web page on "The Greatest Chess Players" for more details.)
The games in this book are well written and easily understood by any class of player. The author did a great job here, and this probably remains the best book - dollar for dollar - on Morphy.
And in case you think these moves are easy to find, I once tested some of these moves on a GM ... who was approximately 18 months away from winning the U.S. Championship ... and he failed to find some of the moves that Morphy found quickly and easily!
The story in here is good, the games are great. Paul Morphy's games are the best vehicle for mastering the basics of chess. They are also very beautiful.
If you buy this book AND play through a few of the games - I personally guarantee you will not be disappointed with it. (And if you are, you can sell it on e-bay for almost what you paid for it.)

About the Author
Dr. Signe Beebe is a graduate of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and has practiced integrative medicine since 1995. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbology, Chinese food therapy and veterinary tui-na by the Chi Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine and China National Society of TCVM, and has completed the certificate program in Canine Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Beebe owns the Integrative Veterinary Center in Sacramento, California, where she combines conventional medical therapies with Chinese medicine. Dr. Beebe is an assistant editor and advisory board member of the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM). She is the co-author of Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine, and she regularly lectures at scientific meetings in the US and internationally. Dr. Michael Salewski is a graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College, Oregon at Hindsight Veterinary Care, which treats exclusively using the modalities of TCVM and chiropractic. He co-authored Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine and is currently working on a book about equine chiropractic care. John K. Chen, Ph.D., Pharm.D., O.M.D., L.Ac. Dr. John Chen actively participates in education, research and the frontiers of contemporary application of herbal medicine. An editorial board member for the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), Medical Acupuncture, John Chen was also a board member of the 1999 Los Angeles Times Festival Honorary Committee and speaker on Herbal Medicine for the City of Los Angeles First Annual Festival of Health. Appearing in the Discovery Channel 1999 six-hour documentary on alternative and complementary medicine, Dr. Chen served as the expert resource on Traditional Chinese Medicine. He also was a guest speaker on herb-drug interactions in 1998 for the annual USC Bergen Brunswig convention, during which he addressed over 400 pharmacists and medical doctors. Dr. Chen maintains his consulting practice in Southern California. Tina T. Chen, M.S., L.Ac. Tina Chen is an active and respected educator in Oriental medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. In addition to lecturing on TCM Gynecology and Cosmetology across North America through the widely-respected Lotus Institute of Integrative Medicine, Ms. Chen is active on the faculty of South Baylo University of Oriental Medicine and has been an active contributor to professional journals and publications.

This book is a little dated. **However,** understanding the 'theory' behind interpretations of how political institutions interface (or interlace) with economic processes - and vice versa - is quintessential for the Political Economist. This book goes a long way to helping one do that. Very Good.

This is a very good introduction into the theories of political economy. It covers classical and neo-classical theories, as well as Marxian and Keynesian critiques. Notably missing is Polanyi. Sometimes a bit difficult to read, but then again, this is political economics...

About the Author
There are few authors in Japan who have reached the heights of success as NISIOISIN. Born in 1981, NISIOISIN left of Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, to pursue a career in story-telling. Initially he had ambitions to be a comic artist, but when he realized his art was not up to snuff, he began to focus on his writing. He would eventually win the 23rd Mephisto Prize, for Kubikiri Cycle (Del Rey), acknowledging his talents as a mystery writer, at the age of 20. Since his debut in 2002 he has penned more than 50 novels and a number of comics.

Nishio's works often cover themes of youth, but are framed in genres that are familiar to the masses. His works tend to mix mystery with comedy and touches or romance and/or the supernatural. He is a modern author in every sense, sometimes even experiementing with the Japanese language itself. Many of his works have been adapted into animated television series and films. His best known works are the Monogatari series and Katanagatari.

An Excellent Start to One of the Best Series

Note: This is a NOVEL, and not a manga.

This is a tragic story of two characters [from the monogatari series], namely Koyomi and Shinobu. Chronologically this series is first but was released after the first few novels. The author, however, has stated that this is a good point to start the series, which Vertical have taken upon themselves in the 1st English edition. The novel is slightly smaller than other "light novels" and has a good weight to it. The cover is thick and folds open, showing some nice artwork. Drawings are not prevalent in this release; there's only 1 picture. The story is what we're all here for and it delivers. We are shown the origin of these characters, with typically more action than normal monogatari stories.

Unlike many other light novels, with generic characters, and common "anime" tropes, the author manages to create multi-faceted characters with depth! Each character is unique in their mannerisms, and have small nuances to them. The basic premise of the story is Koyomi is a friendless guy who seemingly has no purpose until one day he sees a vampire...and the story starts from there. There is also quite a bit of dark humor in the series, but not all will appreciate its presence. Overall, this is an excellent novel and I hope Vertical brings the rest to The English language, otherwise i'll have to learn Japanese. Enjoy!

A hope for future English translations?

The first English translation of Nisio Isin's Monogatari series brings hope to fans like myself. Kizumonogatari is where Nisio's Monogatari timeline begins (March 25th - April 8th), but is not the first published book in the series. Hopefully we will see Vertical lead the publishing of the other novels as it appears they may be looking to translate and release in chronological order instead of the original Japanese publish date order.

The publisher Vertical has stated the translator was selected by Nisio Isin's staff.

The cover art differs from the Japanese original as it was redesigned for this translation.

The book is put together well, the pages feel crisp, and the covering is sturdy. I am half way through the novel and the pacing is not cumbersome. It reads a little differently than the anime translation you may be accustomed to. But by all means this is the Monogatari you know.

I'm a quarter way through it already. It's not fantastic writing, but I'm sure that's mostly because of the language difference. Definitely young adult but hey I'm a grown man and watch anime so I guess it goes with the territory :D

The language is different from the anime subs which I'm used to. Took a few dozen pages to get used to it.

It has the essence of the anime series and I'm enjoying it so far. Having only watched the anime I'm excited for more official English releases!

Insite on Mormon doctrine

This work written by a former Catholic priest who converted to the LDS church and later returned to the Catholic Church is a kind description of the beliefs and ceremonies of the LDS. The beliefs are listed, explained and debunked by the author from the author's perspective (Roman Catholic) and with the tedious use of a scripture. It is both an apologetic text book and the story of one mans spiritual journey. It is a good refrence book for anyone that is interested in copmparative religion studies or for one who is being recruited by the Mormons.

Fairly objective, incredibly insightful look at the LDS Church

I love my LDS friends. They are the center of my social outlet. I respect them and enjoy spending all my free time with them. I am a Catholic. I always wanted to learn about what my friends believe, and when I laid my eyes on this book, I knew it was going to be the most insightful piece of literature I could have found.

Once I opened the book, I could not put it down. During all my free time, I was reading it, underlining, highlighting, and scribbling notes in the margins. I spoke with two of my best friends (who happen to be Mormon) about any sort of confusion I might have, and they straightened everything out. The greatest feeling was having them mention specific facts about what they believe, and knowing exactly what they were talking about because I had read the book.

Upon reading the book, one must keep in mind that Bennett does use weighted language. The book is negative towards the Mormon Church, though Bennett is very crafty in his way of saying the Book of Mormon is absurd. He turns his book Inside Mormonism into an extremely pro-Catholic book, explaining why Catholicism is the One True Church, as opposed to any other (including all Protestant churches). Being an open-minded Catholic, I found myself disagreeing or questioning many of Bennett's arguments. However, I found it as insightful as any book written by a non-Mormon could be. I just finished and will soon be discussing with, then handing over the book to my Mormon friends so they can give me their take on it.

In no way did this book turn me anti-LDS. Putting the facts into perspective with how the religion has been treated over the centuries really made me see how commonplace such persecution and critism over a religion is. I may not agree with everything, but I now know what being part of the LDS church is about.

An indispensable and thorough work

What I really like about this book is that it not only demonstrates how and why Mormonism is false, it goes on to give positive alternatives to what Mormonism teaches, rather than leaving the disillusioned Mormon feeling destroyed.
The research and documentation on this book is well done and gives many jumping-off points for further research, even separating the worthwhile references from the rabid. It includes in its appendix the four different accounts of Smith's Vision.
This book is no short read but is fascinating and I would highly recommend it to both those who want to know how to talk intelligently with Mormon missionaries, as well as Mormons who have misgivings about Mormonism's incoherent theology, or its continually self-negating scriptures and elected prophets, or why Mormonism is uniquely apprehensive about sharing all of what it believes to outsiders and lower-ranking insiders.
I find it hard to believe that those who dismiss this book have actually opened it. Even those who are convinced that their branch of Mormonism is right would be ill-advised to ignore such a thorough work.

Introduction to the Second Edition

I saw my first woodstrip canoe in 1971, over 40 years ago. I was working as a freelance commercial artist in downtown Toronto, Ontario, and was looking for a way out of the city and out of the job. Every weekend, I would drive north, up Highway 11, and as I drove through the little village of Trout Creek, I'd see a couple of beautiful wooden canoes stretched out on the lawn of a fellow I eventually came to know, Ross Ellery. Ross had started out building strip-planked/polyester-resin/ fiberglass-reinforced marathon canoes for his own use, and before he knew it, he was in the canoe business.

Being a dreamer, I didn't find it hard to visualize a peaceful life in cottage country, building beautiful boats for people who would line up at the door, with money in hand, begging for one of my swift little craft. It pays to be naive: a person can do a lot when he doesn't know any better.

I began building boats in 1972 in Gravenhurst, Ontario, but after only two years of life at Sundance Canoes, where I discovered the hard reality of operating a labor-intensive craft business on my own, I sold the business to Greavette Boats and escaped even farther from the big city to a hilltop, known as Bear Mountain, on the northern edge of Algonquin Park.

When I sold Sundance, I was already having worries about the instability of the polyester-resin system I was using, but I hadn't lost the boatbuilding dream. Perhaps it was the blood of seafaring ancestors in my veins. It certainly wasn't my upbringing: I was a city boy who had worked every summer since the age of 9, missing out on the usual Canadian boy's introduction to canoes at summer camp.

After learning about the epoxy resins being developed by the Gougeon Brothers and reading in John Wilson's Woodenboat Magazine about the wooden-boat revival in the eastern United States, I decided to give boatbuilding another try. My partner Joan Barrett and I were still looking for a way to earn a satisfying living in the country working for ourselves. We built a stone house with a workshop attached and named the business the Bear Mountain Boat Shop, a name that has stuck through half a dozen moves, first to Bancroft, then south to Peterborough, the heartland of Canada's historic canoebuilders.

I started as a builder of canoes and added boat restoration as I became more and more interested in the history of the craft. Now I spend my time building 30-foot racing canoes, producing plans for amateur builders, preparing books, teaching wooden-boat building and helping out at the Canadian Canoe Museum. Over the years, I have met a lot of amateur builders, both those who have bought Canoecraft and those who have signed up to build a boat with me.

When I think about it, the faces of so many of these people come back to me: the airline pilot who was scheduled for a second triple bypass and wanted to leave something of himself to each of his five daughters; the administrator of a juvenile correctional institution who started building a boat in his office to relieve the stress and, before long, was approached by his rebellious clients, who crowded into his office, asking questions, offering to help; the family that came, three generations at once, to build a boat together. I've taught people as young as 11 and as old as 87, and if I've learned anything, it's that anyone with the proper attention span can do it.

Most of these builders are motivated, at least in part, by a dream. Many have been harboring the urge to build something beautiful for decades, while they raised children and pursued careers, and only now, at retirement age, are they in the position to do something for themselves.

I am always amazed at the number of people who find the decision to build a small boat a pivotal point in their lives. Maybe this is because building a good boat has all the components of a life under control. Working through the building, step-by-step, from thoughtful preparation and careful execution to the reward of a finished boat is a pattern of living that makes sense. Learning to respond to and to work in harmony with materials can tell us something about getting along with ourselves and others. Finding a fair curve requires looking at a line from many different perspectives before making up your mind -- not a bad life lesson either, when you think about it.

Because of the attention to detail I recommend in these pages, a reader might be inclined to take me for a perfectionist. But the truth is that after more than 27 years of building wooden boats, I have yet to build one that wouldn't be different next time. Perfection is a journey. The point for me--and I hope for you--is to take pleasure in where you are today, believing that it will be somewhere else tomorrow.

Looking back over the years, I can see that my initial inexperience has in many ways proved an asset. I started building boats with a technique that was still in the experimental stage. I had no woodworking or boatbuilding experience, which meant that the learning curve was slow and frustratingly steep at times; but the solutions I eventually worked out for myself were ones that produced good results in the shortest time, using common sense and simple tools. Had I been a boatbuilder by trade, or an engineer, the system I developed would not have been as accessible to amateur builders like myself.

The rightness of my approach lies in this book, which has been continuously in print for more than 40 years. It was ahead of its time when I first wrote it with my friend and northern neighbor Merilyn Mohr. When Canoecraft was published in 1983, little information was available on building woodstrip /epoxy canoes. The book quickly became the most used and most respected text on this method of canoe construction, accepted internationally as "the Bible of canoebuilding." It sold more than 100,000 copies in North America and in 1996 was translated into German.

Although it was updated regularly with each reprinting (the first edition went through 10 reprints), I eventually felt the need to update the text with new materials and tools and the techniques that I have learned over the years. I know a lot more about the craft of canoebuilding now than I did in 1983, and after a decade of teaching workshops, I have learned a few things myself.

Casual boatbuilders are better educated and more sophisticated than they used to be. Teaching kayak- and canoebuilding to about 100 students every year has given me a better idea of the skill level of the typical builder. A growing number of potential builders are about 50 years old, with the majority of these being professionals who need to occupy their time as their careers wind down. These people want concise information presented in a language they can understand. Even though their standards are high and they expect a lot of themselves, this is a vulnerable period in their lives. Instructions, I've discovered, must be complete enough that the boat they build will be of professional quality the first time.

In preparing this second edition, I have tried to offer something for the second-time builder too. I have included a larger variety of plans, many of them different from those in the first edition. To avoid confusion, plans are now presented as a traditional table of offsets. I have added a series of builder's tips--tricks of the trade that those familiar with basic woodworking will especially appreciate. I have also included some new techniques--such as building a stapleless boat--and a whole new chapter on carving a paddle, the perfect accompaniment to your handmade canoe. Fans of the original Canoecraft will also notice that the book has been redesigned for easier reading and that the photographs have been reshot and now follow a single boat--a 16-foot Redbird--through every stage of construction.

There really isn't anything better than this book, the bible of cedar strip builds. I used this book alone to build a beautiful boat. The product recommendations and detailed instructions make building a boat a whole lot easier on the nerves. If you are itching to build your own boat, pick up this book and read it cover to cover. Then get started by reading as you approach each step. It paid off for me.

For essentially being a complete instruction manual on how to build a canoe, this book is really a page turner. I'm about halfway through the planking process right now and haven't had any holdups due to the foresight that Ted outlines in this book. The biggest reason this book appears to receive low reviews is due to its lack of pre-lofted plans. I believe the book mentions that lofting is a "facinating" but "complicated" process. In all honesty, the process is pretty facinating, but not at all complicated. Granted, I have an engineering background and have a fairly technical thought process, but if you can't loft these plans yourself by reading a book or watching a few free videos online, this project may be too much for you to handle. The table of heights and half breadths given in the book are essentially points in a simple cartesian (x,y) coordinate system that are presented with slightly more complicated numers. Connect your dots with a flexible batten and voila! - you have yourself plans that only cost you the pencil, paper and ruler you used to write it on. If you have the extra $100 bucks laying around to buy plans, go for it; however, I do think that lofting them yourself adds to the experience and the uniqueness that you impart to your craft.

I was impressed with this book the moment I opened the package. I literally read 3/4 of the book the day it arrived. The pictures are B&W and show good detail, although I wish some were color. The amount of info contained in the book is ALMOST overwhelming. I'm sure to refer back to the book as I build my first canoe. My son has been by three times in the last two weeks; he's picked up this book every time he's stopped. I believe with this book and one other I purchased, they will answer 99% of any questions I might come up with before finishing my boat. It's already helped with several thoughts important before choosing a canoe or starting the project. I'm a firm believer in the phrase " Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.". This book has already helped me get my thoughts together and plan the design and process I want to use. I'm sure it will be invaluable during the actual construction.
