KIZUMONOGATARI: Wound Tale, by NISIOISIN

Around midnight, under a lonely street lamp in a provincial town in Japan, lies a white woman, a blonde, alone, robbed of all four limbs, yet undead. Indeed, a rumor's been circulating among the local girls that a vampire has come to their backwater, of all places.
Koyomi Araragi, who prefers to avoid having friends because they'd lower his “intensity as a human," is naturally skeptical. Yet it is to him that the bloodsucking demon, a concept “dated twice over," beckons on the first day of spring break as he makes his way home with a fresh loot of morally compromising periodicals.
Always disarmingly candid, often hilariously playful, and sometimes devastatingly moving, KIZUMONOGATARI: Wound Tale is the perfect gateway into the world of author NISIOISIN, the bestselling young novelist in Japan today. The prequel to BAKEMONOGATARI (“Monster Tale"), this is where the legendary MONOGATARI series, whose anime adaptations have enjoyed international popularity and critical acclaim, begins. A theatrical feature based on KIZUMONOGATARI is due to be released in Japan in January 2016.

From Publishers Weekly
This light novel, the prequel to Isin's popular Monogatari series, explains how series protagonist Koyomi Araragi met the vampire known as Kissshot Acerolaorion Heartunderblade. After Kissshot is dismembered and left for dead by vampire hunters, Araragi offers himself as a meal to save the vampire's life, becoming her thrall in the process. In order to become human again, Araragi is forced to battle each of the hunters to retrieve Kissshot's limbs, and he's unprepared for the cost of purging the vampire blood from his body. Fans of the Monogatari series will be intrigued to learn the strange backstory of several major players in the later stories, but the journey to that end is a rough one, due to Ransom's peculiar translation. There's little, if any, attempt made to localize Isin's prose, which contains phrases that make little sense in English and obscure cultural references without benefit of explanatory notes. The frankly pedestrian plot hits all the expected beats (and contains all the casual fan service objectification) of the average shonen book. For Monogatari fans only. (Jan.) \n

Review
“A great prose voice, strong central narrative, and endless thematic echoes make this a rich experience for Monogatari fans and likely a fun one even for newcomers.” – Anime News Network

“Kizumonogatari keeps your eyes glued to the page by intertwining the normal with the paranormal. . . . For the most part, the English translation of Kizumonogatari does a great job in capturing the tone and style of the original. The characters are still fun, quirky, and just as animated as they were in show supported by strong dialogue.” – Japanator.com

An Excellent Start to One of the Best Series
By Raven2827
Note: This is a NOVEL, and not a manga.

This is a tragic story of two characters [from the monogatari series], namely Koyomi and Shinobu. Chronologically this series is first but was released after the first few novels. The author, however, has stated that this is a good point to start the series, which Vertical have taken upon themselves in the 1st English edition. The novel is slightly smaller than other "light novels" and has a good weight to it. The cover is thick and folds open, showing some nice artwork. Drawings are not prevalent in this release; there's only 1 picture. The story is what we're all here for and it delivers. We are shown the origin of these characters, with typically more action than normal monogatari stories.

Unlike many other light novels, with generic characters, and common "anime" tropes, the author manages to create multi-faceted characters with depth! Each character is unique in their mannerisms, and have small nuances to them. The basic premise of the story is Koyomi is a friendless guy who seemingly has no purpose until one day he sees a vampire...and the story starts from there. There is also quite a bit of dark humor in the series, but not all will appreciate its presence. Overall, this is an excellent novel and I hope Vertical brings the rest to The English language, otherwise i'll have to learn Japanese. Enjoy!

A hope for future English translations?
By MBWebb
The first English translation of Nisio Isin's Monogatari series brings hope to fans like myself. Kizumonogatari is where Nisio's Monogatari timeline begins (March 25th - April 8th), but is not the first published book in the series. Hopefully we will see Vertical lead the publishing of the other novels as it appears they may be looking to translate and release in chronological order instead of the original Japanese publish date order.

The publisher Vertical has stated the translator was selected by Nisio Isin's staff.

The cover art differs from the Japanese original as it was redesigned for this translation.

The book is put together well, the pages feel crisp, and the covering is sturdy. I am half way through the novel and the pacing is not cumbersome. It reads a little differently than the anime translation you may be accustomed to. But by all means this is the Monogatari you know.

Finally, we get an official translation of Kizu!
By Mike Styles
I'm a quarter way through it already. It's not fantastic writing, but I'm sure that's mostly because of the language difference. Definitely young adult but hey I'm a grown man and watch anime so I guess it goes with the territory :D

The language is different from the anime subs which I'm used to. Took a few dozen pages to get used to it.

It has the essence of the anime series and I'm enjoying it so far. Having only watched the anime I'm excited for more official English releases!
