Must read for pol/mil/dipl strategists - active or armchair!

Though Svechin's work and examples are dated to post WWI, the concepts are timeless. Insightful observations carrying Clausewitz-style strategic thought into the modern, industrial age. The contextual examples from WWI Eastern Front and the Russian Revolution will likely be lost on anyone not familiar with these campaigns. However, the concepts and commentary interspersed are excellent. Those familiar with the specific military history mentioned above will be doubly-rewarded by such cogent and brilliant analysis of only partially-understood campaigns (to most Western military historians). Svechin's considerations for a revolution in military affairs are certainly practical today. A quote "[A military leader] must put together a perspective in which he will evaluate the phenomena of war. [He] needs a working hypothesis. Of course, not every military leader will take the trouble or have the opportunity to think about the nature of a future war. Strategic mediocrity perhaps prefers to proceed from stereotypes and recipes. Reality will be a cruel disappointment for such a poor excuse for a leader; the theory of strategic art cannot have him in mind." Svechin's work should be a classic of the military art. A must-read for anyone who fancies himself a military, political or diplomatic strategist. If you're concerned about the nature, motives and programs of national defense, then you must read this book.

Warm portrait of talented, tortured and eccentric soccer manager

Sports journalist Duncan Hamilton had the great fortune to start forging a close relationship with soccer manager Brian Clough in 1977, shortly after he took over a struggling Nottingham Forest side. Clough, by turns an overbearing, opinionated, insecure, bullying, outrageous, generous and immensely gifted motivator of players, had already led unfashionable Derby County side to the First Division championship before stumbling badly and derailing his career. Forest, then languishing in the Second Division, were the only team willing to take a chance. Clough, relying on players discarded by other teams and cheap bargains, led Forest to promotion and then won the First Division championship the next year. The team then won the European Cup (the continent's most important trophy, contested in those days by national champions only) two years in a row, which was completely unheard of, especially for a minor team. Hamilton describes Clough's character well and shows how he gradually got to know a very complex and eccentric man. Frustratingly, there isn't actually enough soccer in the book, which is more a psychological portrait than a detailed account of what the team did. Forest didn't have the financial clout to cope in the ever more mercenary world of English soccer and Clough couldn't repeat his successes. He split with his assistant at the club and started drinking more and more heavily, so the book becomes darker as the chapters progress. It's well worth reading, though.

Clough the man, not Clough the manager

Brian Clough is a perennially interesting subject and this book does add to our understanding of this complex man, although it also falls short in a number of ways.

Hamilton, although a sports journalist, attempts to present us with a complex psychological portrait of his subject. To this end he succeeds in providing a sympathetic and detailed portrayal of Clough’s strengths and weaknesses. He provides plenty of examples and anecdotes to illustrate his ideas and by the end of the book the reader feels that Clough’s complexity has been illuminated, warts and all. However, this is also something of a reductionist approach, so that Clough becomes a psychological study, rather than a brilliant football manager. The football is not given nearly enough emphasis, so that Clough’s extraordinary achievements are diminished. Hamilton shows little appreciation for the game. The drama of football at the highest levels is nothing more than the background against which Hamilton’s relationship with Clough is played out.

You will learn more about Clough the man from this book, but for those primarily interested in the football, you will likely find this a let-down.

"I've got you under my skin"

One could easily title this saying this is a highly acclaimed award winning sports book of the year on the legendary manager Brian Clough but that is to state the obvious.

My review title comes from indeed, the fact that Brian Clough was a big Frank Sinatra fan and others of that genre and song lyrics are quoted from time to time and while at the same time, BC like Bill Shankly came up with some highly remembered quotations in their own right.

I had to read the likewise, popular novel and now, movie too, The Damned Utd but not before this one, but after reading 'The Damned United', I got out "Provided you don't kiss me" and decided to read it a second time because yes, the subject matter "got under my skin" here, in fact, if desired, one could make quite a study of the man and read other books as well. I was not sure if the Brian Clough figure portrayed in the 'Damned Utd.' meshed with the Clough presented in the "provided you don't kiss me" book which is all from first-hand experience. The author of this book, Duncan Hamilton who spent 18 years with managing legend Brian Clough said he did not recognize the Clough in 'The Damned Utd.' but that Clough may have undergone a big change by the time he got to Nottingham (in leaving Leeds, Clough received very generous severence payments making him financially independent along with the wealth of experience managing Derby, Leeds for 44 days, Hartlepool and Brighton). Okay, good to know I have retained some reading comprehension.

This book is not so much a straight-forward biography of Brian Clough's life but rather vignettes of his life. I was even able to categorize the 11 chapters by the subject matter.

Chapter 1: Introduction of main two characters of the book, journalist Duncan Hamilton and Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough. It is up to the reader, but I read it as very much a friendship vs. a professional relationship.

Chapter 2: Introduction of Clough's left-hand man, perhaps better put, "Co-Manager" in actuality if not in title: Peter Taylor- former teammate/goalkeeper of Clough as well, he was a bit like a fatherly figure to him when Clough played soccer professionally. In all likelihood, Clough would not have been as successful without Taylor and possibly vice-versa. Clough and Taylor were a team though Clough received most of the publicity.

Chapter 3: Falling out with Taylor.

Chapter 4: Peter Shilton, reknown all-time great goalkeeper along with various stories of other players at Nottingham Forest.

Chapter 5: European Play of Clough's teams, Derby and Nottingham Forest, the latter winning back-to-back European Championships (Now Champions League).

Clough did so much with Derby and Nottingham Forest, yet, they are both teams from smaller cities, 'small teams' versus the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal or even Newcastle let alone the likes of the 'Galacticos' of Real Madrid and other big European teams.

The great Ajax, Johann Cruyff and total football triumphed during one of the years Derby ventured into the European competition, but thank goodness. Clough seemed to hold a grudge that year that one of the other teams was up to bribing referees and the like. Football/Soccer at times leaves something to be desired with those that bend the rules. Clough is to be highly admired if for nothing else, for his principled stands for sportsmanship and fair play, no hotdogging with goal celebrations or gamesmanship.

Chapter 6: When Clough interviewed and sought the job of manager for the National (3 Lions) England soccer team in the 1970s. I think he could have done a good job. I also think, again, Mr. Taylor would be needed too. Clough stirred up too many waves to get the job and the directors who would have hired him are probably what we would call "stuffed suits" and so Brian was not hired.

Chapter 7: psychological, personal management style of Clough.

Chapter 8: A Sinatra song quote is title of the chapter, "There may be trouble ahead", dealing with a downturn in Nottingham Forest's fortunes in the league as well as financial trials the Club endured. Really, he was a big Sinatra fan.

Chapter 9: Years of alcohol abuse start to take tow on Brian Clough.

Chapter 10: Retirement as manager of Forest.

Chapter 11: Post-management relationship/"friendship" with author Duncan Hamilton.

Epilogue

There are also some excellent additions to this book, the "p.s." features including an interview of Hamilton comparing his book to the Damned United, a timeline on Brian Clough, his record as player and coach and more.

This is a book about Clough, the real Clough. So often, Clough is remembered in some ways about his life, boiling it down to his famous quotes, "I wouldn't say I was the best manager, but I was in the top one" or Clough is remembered for his cantankerous personality or his green rugby shirt.

Wonderful!!

After I ordered this book I found the authors website and without connecting the two were the same I printed out a bunch of info from his site. I was so delighted when the book arrived and it was the same. the book has more complete info and is easier to read. I've had very good luck dehydrating foods and am working on getting our meals planned for a backpacking expedition. It's simple and very easy to use also. I've rehydrated some foods to make sure I would still like them and have been pleasantly surpised with the taste and quality. Thanks for an awesome cookbook!!! Simply a must have for any backpacker that wants to avoid the high price and bad taste of that packaged stuff.

THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!

This book is so well put together that I don't know where to start telling how great it is. What I like best is that there are full color photos on every page. How foods look before and after dehydrating, how each recipes looks cooked up. Each direction is simple and to the point, has a ton of information. I bought a Excalibur Dehydrator 2 years ago and have been dehydrating ever since. In fact when I was researching what type of dehydrator to buy I came across Chef Glenns website and have been hooked since then. (backpackingchef.com.) I would use alot of these recipes in everyday life. I am not a back-packer (would love to though), but do camp alot and do dutch oven cooking. I will be putting meals together and storing in the trailer for our trips. Keep up the great work!

A MUST for Long-Distance Backpackers Who Love to Eat!!

My girlfriend and I used tips and recipes in this book to feed ourselves two meals each day as we hiked the Appalachian Trail for five months in 2015. The book was very helpful and our meals were envied by most other hikers we encountered. We met several other hikers who also used this book and dehydrated all of their meals for the AT.

About the Author

William Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for twenty-three years. He received his BA in mathematics from the University of Colorado and his MS and PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the mathematics curriculum with a special interest in mathematical modeling and differential equations as it applies to problems in the biosciences. He has written a quantitative reasoning textbook, Using and Understanding Mathematics; an undergraduate problem solving book, Ants, Bikes, and Clocks; and two tutorial monographs, The Multigrid Tutorial and The DFT: An Owner’s Manual for the Discrete Fourier Transform. He is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Vice President for Education, a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, a recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.

Lyle Cochran is a professor of mathematics at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He holds BS degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Oregon State University and a MS and PhD in mathematics from Washington State University. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses at Washington State University, Fresno Pacific University, and, since 1995, at Whitworth University. His expertise is in mathematical analysis, and he has a special interest in the integration of technology and mathematics education. He has written technology materials for leading calculus and linear algebra textbooks including the Instructor’s Mathematica Manual for Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David C. Lay and the Mathematica Technology Resource Manual for Thomas’ Calculus. He is a member of the MAA and a former chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Whitworth University.

Bernard Gillett is a Senior Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; his primary focus is undergraduate education. He has taught a wide variety of mathematics courses over a twenty-year career, receiving five teaching awards in that time. Bernard authored a software package for algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus; the Student’s Guide and Solutions Manual and the Instructor’s Guide and Solutions Manual for Using and Understanding Mathematics by Briggs and Bennett; and the Instructor’s Resource Guide and Test Bank for Calculus and Calculus: Early Transcendentals by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillett. Bernard is also an avid rock climber and has published four climbing guides for the mountains in and surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park.

Had to return it because it was a different version of the required text for my course...

I purchased this and had to return it; was not able to use it for my calc class because although the title, authors, and edition matched up to the book listed on the syllabus, the chapter practice questions varied significantly from the required text and I could not do the required homework as a result. Apparently there are two different versions of this one textbook, so make sure this is the correct version needed for your course before purchasing it!

I am very disappointed at the book

Some sections are missing. For example. for chapter 3, "the derivatives of logarithm and inverse function", this section is missing!!! I am very disappointed at the book, cuz this is a textbook, if it's missing materials that we are going to learn in class, our grades will be affected, so should i feel the professor that,"oh my book is missing pages"?!!!

Absolutely the worst textbook I have seen

Calculus is a difficult subject, and was even more so with a text book as this. The examples skip way too many steps so one can't easily figure out how to move forward on a problem. Also, in the latter chapters, the examples use easier problems like sine and cosine then the homework uses complicated problems with tangent and inverse trigonometric functions! Terrible terrible book. I had to look everything up on my own which I really shouldn't have to and it became very time consuming.
Therefore, if you can avoid a class with this book, I recommend that as a first option. Otherwise utilize khan academy online and that will get you through calculus.

One of the great poets of the twentieth century

Wystan Hugh (W. H.) Auden is rightly regarded as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He is one of my favorites because of his great skill with language, his ability to talk about everyday life in wonderfully insightful ways, and to sing while he helps us see what he sees. His even greater gift is to make his words feel as if they came from out of our own mind and heart. We want to possess them.

Yet, he was also a very learned man, but his learning always has a point about life rather than allowing him to step into a spotlight for our adulation. You can flip to any page of this volume and find something to wonder at. Even the plainest poems have depths to plumb and the seemingly obscure yield to patient reading.

While Auden has a somewhat complicated biography, it would be a mistake to get sidetracked in too many details. While knowing the life of an artist often aids our understanding of his work, it is also a mistake to see too many parallels in his work with the happenstance of his life. Great artists draw on their lives, but they also transcend them.

I am very grateful to have this volume in my library.

Don't believe the old man.

Auden is my favorite "modern" English poet (I hate TS Eliot and his fascist friend Pound, for their politics and posturing). I've loved Auden since my college days in the late 40's.(Yes. 1940's.) In those days the poems started with "Musee des Beaux Arts," included "Law Like Love" and "In Memory of W.B. Yeats." The songs started with "As I walked Out One Evening."
A fine clear voice, very even expressions, and sentiments that one could easily subscibe to. I tried to write like that (and in part succeeded). The copy in my library is dated 1945.
Recently I decided to share my love of Auden's poetry and ordered three copies of the book descibed in this listing. What a mistake! It appears that Auden after about 1940, and until the end of his apparently miserable life, changed his style and everything else about himself, AND rewrote, deleted and butchered his early work. What a sad revelation. Don't believe the old man.
I suggest you read the review by N. Dorward for Collected Poems (Modern Library) here at Amazon for more about this and WHICH AUDEN TO BUY AND READ.

"This volume makes me ultimately rather sad, that a poet with such enormous promise (the work he wrote in his early 20s is still utterly astonishing in its accomplishment & daring) never quite made good on it, & even came to hate much of his own best work. It shows them how easily they could go back too the beginning

The 1962 Caldecott medal winner is a re-telling of an Indian fable by Marcia Brown. In it, is a story of a hermit who is thinking about things big and small. While pondering on this huge sees a small mouse pass by. Then he sees a crow coming to eat the mouse and intervened, thinking how it is unjust that since the crow is bigger, it would eat the mouse. Afterwards, he takes the mouse to his hut, and there a cat tries to eat it. Since the hermit knew magic, he also turned the mouse into a cat to stop the other feline from eating it. Then came a dog who barked in the forest and scared the cat. The hermit then changed the cat into a dog. Next came a tiger who wanted to feast if on the canine and the hermit changed it into a total tiger. At last, the tiger is one of the biggest animals on the forest and becomes too proud of his appearance. The hermit told him he made him who he was, for he once was a mouse. Enraged with the hermit, the tiger decided to kill him. Since the hermit could read his mind, he accused him of being ungrateful and as punishment he would be turned to his former self. Finally, the hermit saw the mouse pass by and kept pondering about big and small.
This story is an adaptation of a Indian fable, and is quite appropriate for children. Even in their short age, they have probably already thought about big and small, maybe even because of a bully and can understand the stories theme. It covers the topic of food cycle, for you can observe the small animal being the bigger animal’s food. And it also covers the lesson which is not to be excessively proud. You should always be humble, no matter how high or big you have become, especially if you got there thanks for someone’s generosity.
I consider that this book can help bring humility to those children who lack some. It shows them how easily they could go back too the beginning. With this story how the small easily turned back into one after getting to be a royal tiger. Being humble is something that each person should strive to be, for pride, especially in excess, only brings trouble in the end. You should recognize your talents or assets, but not be boastful because of them. It also can give insight on how things work inn the real world, how the bigger person or animal, not necessarily in size, always wants to devour the little person or animal.

An Ancient Indian Treasure

"A rajah of ancient India is said to have had such popular animal fables collected as a 'mirror for princes' to instruct his errant sons." This particular fable is about a mouse who is helped by a forest hermit with magic powers. The Indian hermit magically transforms the mouse into a cat, a dog, and finally a tiger; however, when the tiger gets too proud and forgets its origins, the hermit turns it back into a mouse.
I love this book because the story teaches many lessons and does not have just one definitive moral. The story could serve as a springboard for discussing several topics with young children: the importance of knowing where you came from, the importance of humility, the Hindu concepts of reincarnation and karma, Darwin's theory of evolution, and even which animals make good pets and which ones don't.
The award-winning illustrations are also unique and action-packed, and they perfectly complement the text.
Children ages 2 and up will enjoy having this story read to them, and children ages 4-8 will probably be able to read the simple text on their own. I highly recommend this book to people of all ages! It's an ancient Indian treasure.

Here I come to save the day

Described in its day as attaining, "a fluidity rare in the medium", this illustrated book of woodcuts tells a simple fable that has remained beloved for decades. Claiming to be a tale told from ancient India, the story follows a man, a mouse, and the downfall of pride. A wise hermit lives alone in the forest when he happens to spy a mouse about to be eaten. Fearful for the little creature, the man changes his new friend into a cat. When a dog threatens his cat, he turns the mouse into a dog, and then (after a similar situation) into a tiger. Now a fine feline of a beast, the former mouse lords his newfound state over the other animals of the forest. After planning the death of his benefactor, the man changes the tiger into a mouse again and everything goes back to as it was (with the mouse, I suspect, a little wiser).
The woodcuts are fine indeed. Delicate little illustrations imbued with life and verve. From snarling dogs to transformed mice the images stand for themselves. I hadn't been aware of the author/illustrator's work before reading her winning, "Stone Soup". After comparing the two, I have to say they're definitely of equal interest. It's nice to see a book giving a clear sighted look at a fable from another country (in this case, India) without any stereotypes or racism. All in all, it's a nice little book with a strong moral core.

Egypt of the Pharaohs, 3rd edition

This is the textbook we use in my Egyptian History course at the University of Alabama. It is a great book on egypt stretching from the old stone age to the Ptolmic Pharaohs.
Interesting to read, I disagree somewhat with Gardiner, but i read the book thirty years after it's first publication. Gardiner's book is essential to anyone wanting to understand Egypt.

interesting for adults

I purchase this book for my 14 year old son since he is very interested in Egyptology. The book was recommended by a tour guide in Cairo. I have to say that it is good for adults since the language is not suitable for teenagers unless they have outstanding reading and comprenhension skills

A classic study and reference for non-classical scholars.

Written by a master in his field and well-written at that, it is no wonder this work finds a place of honor in practically all the bibliographies of succeeding publications. Gardner covers Egyptian history from predynastic times to Greco-Roman, mentioning even the most obscure pharaohs and figures. The plates are exquisite even some forty years after the original photos for them were taken. One's only complaint might be that, since the format guidelines were somewhat different in the 60's, there aren't two spaces after each sentence, but this only takes a couple chapters to get used to. For a closing statement, I recommend you obtain this book so that you may read Gardner's own, for its closing statement rings with the charming chivalry that Gardner and many of his contemporaries practiced.
