About the Author
Vibeke Norgaard Martin is an attorney in California. She practiced commercial litigation at a major international law firm before turning to civil rights litigation and criminal appeals. She has taught at the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, was a visiting scholar at the Centre for Child Law at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and worked for the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Previously, she clerked for the South African Constitutional Court.

Thought Provoking

A friend suggested I get this book for my daughter who is a Junior beginning to voice interest in Law. I read the book myself before giving it to her. It was a surprisingly good read. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes profound, the author offers insight into the conceptual underpinnings of our legal system and practices that I had never before considered. The presentation is originally creative- one concept at a time. Simple. Illustrative. It's entertaining enough that I'm confident my daughter will read it as well. I don't know if it will influence her toward or against the profession but I'm positive it will make her think. Highly recommend.

An engaging and easy-to-read guide for anyone who wants to understand our legal system

Lucky for us, this attorney made it through law school without forgetting how to write in plain English! Many lawyers don't, which is one of the reasons the law can seem dry and sometimes inscrutable. Norgaard explains the fundamentals of our legal system in a straightforward style that anyone can understand, without dumbing it down; she goes beyond describing the rules and explains the logic behind them. The insightful illustrations makes the content even easier to digest and easy to remember. This is a must-read for students (especially those considering law school), and really for anyone who wants to (quickly) deepen their understanding beyond Law & Order.

very informative!

I picked up a copy and found it extremely engaging, informative, and easy to read for someone like me. I've been to college but I consider myself very naive about the legal system. It was humorous but not silly and informative but very succinct. My favorite thing I learned was "Lawyers have to be honest, not truthful" It proceeded to explain that honest means not telling lies, but truthful is telling the whole story to give the whole picture.
I think this book is relevant for almost all American citizens as our country is so full of legislation.
